Saturday 6/26 - Cohasset Little Harbor/Minot light

Post by Chip »

The plan is to leave Cohasset Harbor at 9am. Paddle out to Minot light. Touch it and head over to Little Harbor. Ride the tide into Little Harbor, paddle around and have lunch at the cemetary beach. Paddle out with the outgoing tide. This will be a 7-9 mile moderate pace ocean paddle. There may be parking issues. We can sort it out when we see how many people are going.

We will use the Parker St launch.
http://www.wtpaddlers.org/spots-04.html

Although this is an entry level ocean trip, the right boat and gear are required. At least a 12ft boat with adequate flotation is required. PFDs worn at all times. Must be able to wet exit and perform a self and assisted rescue. Head over to a skills session if needed. It can get a little lumpy out there.

Check the trip guidelines section for other items to bring.

Please post here if you plan on attending.

Here is a trip report for your reading pleasure.

I missed the date in the header and thought the trip was this Saturday - so never mind the pm I sent you. I'm interested in joining you for this trip.

Please count me in.

I've heard that our fine town constabulary is now in the practice of ticketing out of towners parked in the lot behind the light-keepers house (Bancroft Hall)...where they haven't hassled anyone in the past.

I can probably help out. Simplest solution would be for everyone to drop their gear at the Parker Street town launch...and drive back into town to park in the central town lot behind the village. I'll follow behind, pick up, and shuttle folks back to the ramp. Do the same in reverse afterwards.

Then again, the weather wizards are probably already forecasting thunder, lightning, locusts, and massive dust storms for that day. So maybe we should all just plan on staying home.

Jordan, you might see if you can get a spot along the street on the inner harbor between Atlantica and the Inn. Might luck out if its early enough. Not a sure thing though. I'll scope out a few other locations this week.

Really depends on the time - day of week, season, early or mid-day. I'm going to pay a little visit to the cops when I'm next in the village to see if we can get some sort of dispensation for people to park way in the back of the lot behind the lightkeepers house. Probably not...but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Since there's no legal parking nearby, and we're depending on the kindness of local resident Finn McCool to shuttle us from public parking to the launch site, I think it's worth mentioning how critical it is that everyone get to the launch site early enough to unload your boat and get yourself shuttled back to the site. If you start getting behind in your Saturday morning errands and figure, "Oh well, I'll just unload my boat really fast and I'll be able to launch on time", you may be looking at either a VERY long walk from public parking or a ticket from your friendly neighborhood Cohasset PD. And if you wind up getting there a little too early, well... Cohasset harbor isn't the worst place to sit around watching the scenery for a few minutes.

We have 15 people posted for this trip. That's a pretty big group so like Pat said, we should try to get there a little early for shuttling. We do have a buffer for getting into Little Harbor but I don't want to push it. This is the group.

Hey everyone...

Looks like we're going to have a good day tomorrow. I'm going to talk with the cops today to see if we can park behind the Lightkeepers house (Bancroft Hall)... but I'm not hopeful about that. I'll post later on today with the results of my negotiations....

At 8:00-8:30 AM there is a slight chance that some public spaces might be still open along the road from Atlantica/Salt Box along the inner harbor, but you really cannot count on it, especially on warm mid-summer Saturdays when boaters like to get their guests along there quite early before they go out fishing.

So please do plan on arriving early. I'll probably be at the landing scarfing down a muffin and coffee around 8:00 AM...perhaps earlier. We seem to have quite a list of confirmed paddlers, and it will likely require several shuttle trips between the harbor and the central lot behind the village. I'll probably have all my gear ready to go first thing...wait for people to arrive and shuttle to town when there are enough to fill the van.

More later...

Mike, rather than you go back and forth and back and forth and back and forth, it would probably make more sense to have all cars drive to the public parking, then have a few shuttle people to the launch site, back to public parking, and then you drive those last 2-3 drivers to the launch site.

Or... We could shuttle them as they come. Chances are that everyone won't arrive and get unloaded at the exact same instance. I'll try to get there a little early myself, and once we get 4-5 drivers ready to shuttle, I'll make a run.

Just to add to the mayhem, it looks like Charles River has an ocean skills class that day. They should be there around 9am.

OK, here's an update on the parking situation. I just visited the police station and spoke to the desk officer. He suggested that it might be possible to coordinate parking with the on-duty staff tomorrow morning. I'll stop by the station in the morning and see what I can finagle for the group.

Either way, you really have to check with me at the Parker Ave. launch ramp.

See everyone bright and early...

How did the trip go today. One of the Whitewater Turkey Paddlers is curious about what he missed. (There's no tv out here and it's raining lightly so can't start a campfire yet.)

It was a real fine trip. Thirteen turkeys showed up. We paddled out to Minot Light in dead calm seas. Everyone touched the lighthouse. Then a giant octopus reached up and grabbed Jordan's boat, flipped it, and pulled Jordan out of it. That is the only explanation I have for seeing Jordan in the water.

We paddled to Little Harbor which was seriously cranking out the turbulence on the incoming tide. Everyone paddled under the bridge and then practiced ferries and eddy turns and some wave play just under the bridge. The octopus had followed us though, and several people were its victims. Ron hit a nice combat roll, and it was not an easy place to roll in that wave train. Lorrie did too. The eddies were enormous circulating swiftwater swirls.

We had lunch at cemetery beach (octopus sandwiches). When we returned to the bridge the flow had slowed considerably so everyone looked quite heroic doing ferries back and forth. Finally the tide was near slack and we made our way out and back to Cohasset harbor.

Hopefully everyone returned feeling good about the tidal-current practice. It was great to see everyone ramping it up and meeting the challenges of the conditions.

thank you, Chip, for organizing this trip!!
