AUG 28 - Nickerson Beach - Spectacle - Georges

Post by Chip »

Let's start this again.
Nickerson Beach in Quincy to Spectacle and Georges. About 10 miles with a couple of long stops. Probably 10am launch. May have to limit this due to limited parking.

The usual disclaimers. At least a 14 ft boat. You must have done a wet exit and performed assited rescues. There will be chop and boat traffic so you should comfortable in your boat in those conditions. This will be a moderate pace with a few stops.

Please re-respond or respond if you are interested.

I'd go, but I'm already committed to another trip on Boston Harbor leaving from Nickerson at 10am.

I'm planning to go. If things get crowded I don't mind putting in at another location. Possibly City Point.

I'd like to make my annual appearance for a Turkey Trip . Like Nelson, I can launch from an alternate site and rendezvous if the Nickerson launch gets too crowded.

If high tide is at 8 wewon't have any problem launching at 10. How shallow it'll be when we get back depends on the time we return - dead low would be the most problematic, but still not near as bad as Hingham.

Thanks for the new thread... it was getting confusing... but I can be 'simple' at times.

I think I will plan to launch from the rocky beach by the gas tank. I think you can park up high there without worrying about the tide. If anyone knows any different, let me know.

FYI, you may want to find a way to check the tolerance of parking a car there (near the gas tanks). Paddled last season with Mike Rinaldi who parked there and was met by a very discouraging 'welcoming committee' of OFFICIALS giving him a lot of grief about parking there. And that was 2 seasons ago. The tide may not be your main concern.
The day we went out for Boston Harbor Is we launched off POPE JOHN PAUL ll playground (I think off the expressway- Exit 11 B-but may be A). There's a concrete boat launch there, safe parking... may be a bit muddy at low tide and it will be further to paddle to meet up with us. There is another launch further down the Neponset River but the launch is more difficult- no real boat ramp. There may be better places but I have no experience with any.
Just my FYI.

Pulling my toe out, I obligated to go to a surprise 50th birthday party. Senility strikes early if it's a surprise for this guy that he's turning 50.

Linda, are we talking about the same place? Where were the officials from? I guess we could always launch from Tenean Beach.

You can launch at Nickerson and then move the cars up the street. The chain is down and you can drive onto the beach to unload. We went from there last week to Spectacle Island and back. Lost my car keys on Spectacle (dropped them out of a dry bag while fishing for a camera). Park Ranger found them and contacted me through my mechanic, whose tag was on the single key. They are mailing them back. Luckily, a friend was with us and I have a set of keys at home. My husband kayaked across to Marina Bay, talked them into letting him leave his kayak on a dock, and had a few drinks before we came back. Beautiful day, with beautiful views of Boston to be had.

Looks like we are up to 10. I would like to close it off now. Some of us are trailering and Jim has a tandem so I think we have 6 cars. Should fit ok. If people are launching from alternate sites I will have my radio on 68. We will probably be paddling around thompson to get to spectacle. Let me know your plan to meet us. Paddle over to NIckerson, Spectacle, whatever.

Birdseye... NO, that site should be OK. The place where Mike had a problem was right at the Gas Tank... but it looks like the sign up is closed and their will be enough parking so I don't know if you're doing an alternative site, anyway... sorry to take so long to reply... computer problems until just now.

Well, my shoulder is signaling that 10 miles tomorrow might be asking a bit much at this point. I don't want to be a drag on the group...and I think that it might be a wiser move to hold off a few more days and try the waters on Thursday night at Hingham.

So...I'm out of this trip, alas.

See everyone on Thursday night.

Thank You, Chip for posting this trip... a LOVELY day on the water... couldn't have asked for anything more (except maybe less boat traffic). I'm glad I was able to make this trip!
