Washburn camping preparations for May 21/22

Post by pat »

I'm starting this separate thread as sort of a private conversation for those who have signed up for the Washburn camping trip to coordinate things like carpooling, meal prep, etc... If people have vehicles that can handle multiple boats/passengers, this would be a good place/time to post that.

As far as food goes, most of you probably know that our lead chef Chip had determined that the college graduation of his firstborn is somehow more important than cooking for us. (Yes, I know... Let's all roll our eyes.) If anyone else feels particularly adept at cooking in the wild, please step forward now. Chip has volunteered his gear to help out.

So we need to decide how we want to do this. We could try to coordinate a communal meal, or we could all fend for ourselves. I'm personally leaning toward the former, because I'd feel guilty eating my chateau briand sitting next to someone eating a PB&J. On the other hand, it might be tricky to find something that everyone likes.

So if people have a preference about any of this, sound off now.

Pat - thanks for starting the coordination effort.

I like the idea of a communal meal for Saturday evening. I'm no cook at all, but I've enlisted the help of my wife who will help me prepare a crock-pot beef stew the day before to bring along and heat up. I think this could feed 4 - 6 people. I only have a small stove, so I don't think I could re-heat anything larger than that anyway.

For breakfast, I really enjoyed the sandwiches you guys made, but it looked like way too much work for the cooks. I'd vote for individual breakfasts.

For transportation, I could bring one or two people with me. I can carry 3 sea kayaks (total) on the top of my truck. I might want to arrive extra early again this year and do an early morning paddle before heading to the campsite.

I'll be happy to bring appetizers for everyone for happy-hour! Probably something I don't have to cook since I don't have a camp stove, and I don't know how to use one....

I can offer my exclusive granola creation for breakfast: oats, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, almonds or other nuts....saturated with a concoction of honey, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, salt, oil and water. Baked in trays until just slighly crunchy or soft...and sprinkled with raisins after. (Don't want to cook the raisins...they get hard as rocks if you do.) I usually use Almond Milk on it.

Glad to contribute elsewhere to fill the culinary gaps.

Going to be fun. 8)

Perhaps something like beef stew in two or three batches would work out. I'd be glad to do one batch.

I would like to bring a couple of dishes that we could eat in appetizer size portions along with the beef
stew or later in the evening if we get the munchies. Both are in a sauce, so I'll bring along some rolls.,
and both are on the slightly spicy(hot) side. If hot is not good for anyone, please let me know, I can make
it mild.
I do have a little stove that I will bring along also.

Well, dammit, we -- meaning my stunned-into-silence spouse and your stupified humble servant -- have just been graced with an extremely surprising family development. If it turns out as foretold, it essentially means goodbye to free time from now until mid-July. I am lobbying diligently for a personal reprieve from the madness next weekend, and it looks like mercy may prevail. So I am still planning to join you all on this trip. We'll see.

Screw the granola. If I make it, you may find me on good terms with a fifth of Jack Daniels at camp. I'm going to need it. :?

Discerning minds may easily figure out what's going on. If not, it will come to you....

Life...

I would be happy to bring/cook Eggs and Bacon for breakfast. I might even be able to convince my wife to bake cookies for us again this year. Also I have room for a boat/person if anyone needs a ride

I will bring some cheese and crackers to share for an appetizer. I am happy to help with heating stew or heating up a separate dish (rice, noodles?), but my stove is small (it can't handle a big pot) as I am used to cooking for myself or one other only. I am also fine with bringing my own dinner, but if someone wants to bring a big batch of stew, I will happily help heat it and eat it! My pot is probably about the right size for heating up two portions of stew. I think it would simplify things for us to do our own breakfast and lunches.

Is there a meeting (at the launch) time planned for Sat morning? I will most likely drive down on my own, unless someone needs a ride and is not too far out of the way. I am leaving from Westborough. There is also a slight possibility I can go on Friday - anyone else? I will not know until mid-week next week.

I won't be in a hurry to leave on Sunday and can stay until mid afternoon or later if others want to stay longer without being alone.

Last year when we spoke to the ranger just before he left, his attitude was that if you make it to the island, regardless of how booked they are, they'll shoe-horn you in someplace. So if you'd like to go down and camp Friday night, I'm sure there would be no problem with them.

Ok, to try to hammer down some plans, let me put out a few edicts and if anyone sees anything wrong, they can point it out.

Norm and I will each bring beef stew for six people. Amongst all of us, I think we have enough stoves, but does anyone have pots big enough to hold that much stew? That is, Norm's batch, and then my batch - not both simultaneously. I can probably bring a pan down if we need it. Packing is always an issue, and a pan that size takes up some room, but I can probably squeeze it in somehow.

We're responsible for our own lunches. Last year, some of us stopped at a restaurant after we got off the water on Sunday. If anyone's interested in doing that again, I like that idea.

Breakfast: If enough people would like to keep that on an individual basis, that's fine with me. Personally, I like something cooked on a cold morning. I'd like to not have to be in charge of that one since I'm doing the stew. I could only offer suggestions. If something egg-based is done, eggs could be beaten before the trip rather than having to protect individual eggs in a kayak. But I'm hoping someone (or someones) come up with an idea. Again, I'm sure they'll be no shortage of stoves. Just ingredients and cookware.

Just a couple of thoughts.
Since you have a lot of stoves. Perhaps you can use 3 or 4 small/medium pots to cook the stew. Get everyone invoved. You can borrow my pots if needed.

On the eggs, we usually use eggbeaters for scrambled eggs. Easy to carry and taste ok with some veggies and ham added.

Don't forget camp water for dishes, etc.

Chip. If I remember correctly you posted a kayak-camping check-list last year. That was really helpful when I packed. Do you by any chance have that kicking around? We will miss you on the trip, but maybe we can pull off another camping trip this season. Lowell??

By the way I just bought a tiny cooking system. At least I can make my own coffee and maybe some oatmeal for breakfast???.....

Pat,

I have a 1.5 and a 3 liter pan. They will work for the stews.
They should also be okay to cook eggs, if that is the preference
for breakfast. I like a hot breakfast, too.

I'm still planning to be there....and I can bring my dual-burner camp stove and some pots along. (Can't seem to find my venerable Svea backpacking stove... I suspect it has found new quarters with my son up in Maine.) Always good to have ample hot water available. I'm still a little foggy on what I can add to the culinary lineup though.

I will bring some crusty whole grain bread to go with the stew and some cookies or some type of sweets for dessert. For breakfast I'll bring some packets of oatmeal, nuts and raisins. I have a coffee sock and will bring coffee. What is the total head count. Mark G

All

Sounds like a lot of food. I have a small 1 burner camp stove, I will bring it. I am not much of a camping gourmet chef, with the exception of a couple cups of coffee in the morning I generally can do these overnights with no cooking.

I will bring some Gazpacho as an addition for dinner and some lox, cream cheese and bagels for breakfast.

For breakfast, it sounds like the mood is split between "cooked eggs, communal" and "fend for yourself and/or not eggs". So let's do this. Everyone who wants to be in on some sort of egg-based warm breakfast, raise your hands.

Tracey, could you be the "eggs person"? That is, bring everything you'd need to make an egg breakfast for those interested. I think stoves won't be a problem. You're already bringing a pan, so whatever else is needed - spatula, butter/margarine, etc.

My packing list (I do not necessarily bring everything on the list - depends on trip) I pack everything in drybags at home and carry them to the kayak from the car in lightweight bags that I bring with me to carry items from the kayak to the campsite. All tent and tarp guy lines are made from reflective gold cord (Kelty triptease) for safety at night. Practice packing the kayak at home to make sure everything fits where you think it will! Make a diagram if you need to refer to it when packing at the launch. Ticks are bad at Washburn. Consider spraying clothing with Permethrin and letting it dry before packing clothes. - Nancy
