Charles River - Newton - Sunday, 11/20/11, 11:00am Launch

Post by norm »

Some of us die-hards are still looking to get out paddling! Weather and tides on the coast are not promising for this weekend, so we're planning to head inland. So far it's Bea, Sue and myself. Jordan hopes to join us but can't commit yet.

We're planning on paddling the Charles River in Newton, launching from the parking lot across from Charles River Canoe and Kayak. We'll paddle both up-river and down-river from this spot. We picked up maps of the river at CRCK after the cold water clininc last week but I don't have mine handy, so I'm not sure of the distances. I'm guessing it will be 10 to 15 miles. We'll find a spot to stop for a lunch break but we won't take the time to go swimming.

The water temperature in the Charles last week was 48 degrees. That's colder than Boston Harbor which was 52 degrees. Proper clothing is necessary! Dry suit rentals are available at CRCK http://www.paddleboston.com/rentals/drysuit.php It looks like 11/20 is the last day the store will be open this season according to their calendar.

Wet exit/Rescue skills are required.
I would recommend at least a 15 foot boat.
Ability to paddle 10-15 miles.
Proper clothing and gear for cold water and air temps required!

Please reply if you plan to attend.

Norm, thank you for posting. Judging from the map I think the total distance will be shy of 12 miles. There is one dam about 3 miles upstream, and one dam about 3 miles downstream. Let me know if you want to car pool. Rockland Park & Ride works, but other suggestions are welcome.
