Saturday Paddle - 4/28/12 - Westport River - East Branch

Post by norm »

The weekend weather forecast is looking fairly decent, cool and breezy but clear. Tide is low mid-day in Boston Harbor so I'm planning on heading to the Westport River where the tide is high at 1:46pm. I'd like to get out and do a long paddle of 15 miles or more. I'm looking to get in shape for a possible longer paddle next week so that is why I want to do over 15 miles.

The plan is to launch from the state boat ramp at: http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Unknown+road&daddr=1+Cherry+and+Webb+Ln,+Westport,+MA+02790&hl=en&sll=41.514579,-71.068089&sspn=0.004659,0.009645&geocode=Ffp1eQIdUJbD-w%3BFUp0eQIdGJTD-ymhXxe1iwPliTGCz6LLmVceOA&t=h&mra=prev&z=17

I believe it costs $5 per parking space, but the spaces are set up for trailers, so 2 or 3 cars can park in one space.

Meet at 10:30am and plan to launch at 11:00am.

We'll paddle up to the top of the East Branch which is about 7.5 miles and then return to the boat ramp with a possible side excursion down into "The Let" section to increase the miles if participants are up for it.

I noticed last night there are about 8 geo-caches near the river in this area, so if people are interested, we could make a couple stops to find a few of them.

The water is still cold and the distance is going to be fairly long, so this is not a simple paddle.

Wet exit/Rescue skills are required.
I would recommend at least a 15 foot boat.
Ability to paddle over 15 miles.
Proper clothing and gear for cold water and air temps required!

Please respond if you plan to attend.

Sue - if you can make it and want to car-pool, we could meet at the 24/106 park-n-ride again.

Hi Norm,
I plan to go. Do you want to shoot for 9am at the park and ride?

Glad you're coming. I'm trying to remember the steps to load up my GPS and Blackberry with geocaches. It looks like you could use geocache GC1306X, Anchors Aweigh 2, to lead you to the state boat ramp.

Thanks Norm. I'll work on uploading caches tonight. Hope the website is up and running, had a problem last time I went.
