Saturday 9/1/12 9:00am Nelson Beach - Plymouth
It sounded like there was quite a bit of interest for a daytime paddle on Saturday during the discussions at the Thursday night PPR at Monponsett Inn and earlier on the pond in Hanson. I had been talking about a paddle in Wareham, originating at the state boat ramp on route 195, but Chris brought up an excellent point about how shallow it can be there at low tide. After checking the tide and weather again, it looks bad for the return trip.
So, a new, better idea is to take advantage of the local 12:30pm high tide in Plymouth. I'm hoping that a 9:00am arrival at Stevens Field would beat the beach crowd for parking. The mid-day wind forecast is about 15mph out of the north-northeast, so I think we'll need to make a decision on a route dependent on who signs up for the trip and what the actual conditions are when we get out there. I've laid out two paths, both about 17 miles long, one inside the bays and the other out around Gurnett Light.
On the inside bay route, we could swing by Howland Landing and see the new parking area and check to see if it might be available to non-residents after Labor Day. Then go over and find a sandy spot on the back of Duxbury beach and/or go into the creek behind Gurnet Light before returning past Clark Island with the wind at our backs.
On the outside route, we could swing out to Saquish Beach and then around Gurnet Light and stop on the outside of Duxbury Beach if it's not too rough.
Here is a Google Earth picture of the 2 proposed routes with the inside route highlighted in yellow and the outside route in red. If the wind forecast is accurate, we may want to stay inside for a protected lunch break area and have a better possibility of doing some rolling practice, as well as a more direct push from the wind on the return leg.
Keep in mind Eileen's evening trip in the same area. You could paddle all day, take a break for dinner and then move to the other launch area and join Eileen's sunset moonrise paddle to Brown's Bank.
Wet exit/Rescue skills are required.
I would recommend at least a 15 foot boat with front and rear bulkheads and spray skirt.
Ability to paddle 17-18 miles.
Bring a lunch, snacks and lots of water and sunscreen.
Arrive at Stevens Field at 9:00am for a 9:30 launch
Please respond if you plan to attend.
Change in put-in location: Nelson Recreation Area a.k.a. Nelson Beach

Looks like we might run into all the bikers at the Mayflower Sprint Triathlon

Do you know the route or have you seen the route online anywhere? It would be nice to know where the detours will be set up. I'll start looking.

Always room for you Jordan. Watch for change of put-in location.
Re: Saturday 9/1/12 9:00am Stevens Field - Plymouth
Norm, The bike race goes right through Stevens Field. Should we leave from Nelson St?
Re: Saturday 9/1/12 9:00am Stevens Field - Plymouth
The bike race goes through Stevens Field multiple times, so I'd say that launch spot will be unavailable. Everything, swim, biking and run is south of the state boat ramp: http://maps.onemillionrevolutions.org/map.jsp?mapID=18017
I think we need to move the put-in location to Nelson Street Recreation Area. I hope the lot there doesn't fill up with triathlon spectators.
Here is the Google Maps Link to the new put-in spot:

It looks like 99 Nelson Street, Plymouth should work in a car GPS.
I hope this works out ok?

Yeah, I looked at the course map before posting my message. We're hopefully OK launching from Nelson's Rec area.

Plymouth beach is free before 8:30 AM, if you would like to start on the outside.
