Multi-Level paddle with picnic/cook out Sept 22 rain date 29
I would like to propose a multi-level trip from Fort Adam in Newport RI on September 22 rain date 9/27 with a Picnic/Cook out following the paddle (Maybe even the swap meet I’ve been reading about). For the less aggressive, such as my wife who would like to attend, this location offers up to a 7 mile trek without leaving the inner harbor or crossing channels (see map 1). For the longer distance paddlers may option are possible by heading north into the Narragansett Bay (see map 2). This area offers endless variations with the actual route being dictated by weather the day of the event.
The harbor itself is spectacular to paddle because you can be within a few feet of everything from multi-million dollar yachts, sail race machines and antique schooners. There are also several mansions along the harbor.
I envision the group going for the longer paddle could launch at 9:00 and the other group or groups could launch at their discretion with the expectation of returning around or close to the same time for some type of cook out.
I would be on the distance group so someone would need to step up to somewhat coordinate a green and yellow team.
Sea conditions in Narragansett Bay can vary drastically between early morning, noon and late afternoon please do not try to exceed your abilities.
The air temps are weaning so all paddlers should be competent Wet exit/assisted rescue competent.
The distance group would require:
Wet exit/Rescue skills.
I would recommend at least a 15 foot boat with front and rear bulkheads and spray skirt.
Ability to paddle 10-17 miles.
This could be an easy trip or there might be tough headwinds on the return leg
This is my first attempt at as a trip organizer so please cut me some slack; your input is welcome to help make this a memorable day on the water for all.
Fort Adams info:
Parking/launching is free

Tide info:
The mean range of tide is 3.5 feet.
9/22 L@6:14am, H@1:41pm, L@8:12
9/29 H7:46am, L@ 12:59, H@8:09pm
Current NE of Rose Is. < .9knots
There may be a long period of slack water preceding the flood, or a double flood. The flood reaches a strength of about 1.2 knots; the ebb is regular and averages 1.5 knots. Northward of Bull Point, tidal current velocities seldom exceed 1 knot. In the inner harbor they are usually less than 0.5 knot.

Okay! We are up for probably the long red paddle but agree with the notion that we have to evaluate and plan on the day looking at conditions.
Could there be more details on the cookout, Please?
AND a SWAP MEET?? Definitely interested!

Hi Ken, you can put me down for the distance paddle. Please check out the Naval Station's restrictions on paddling in their area north of the Newport Bridge. Last year they had signs posting area restrictions, and they seem very sensitive to intruders.
Re: Multi-Level paddle with picnic/cook out Sept 22 rain dat
Good catch Gif
Chart below:
The only part that I had noticed was restricted was the straight T T T T line from R#2 to the tip of the jetty.
But you are right they now have most of Coasters Islands restricted.
Do you know what the triangle that goes out to G # 17 is?
Abby,
Cook out picnic/cook out details will develop as the week goes on.

Bea,
To get the trip from your phone/ Map My Ride, login on your pc, select the workout and along the right side in map options click export this route ( see picture )
Save it in a location that you will be able to find it. as long as you have Google Earth loaded it will open and display.

We woke up to drizzle and had the windshield wipers on most of the drive. Visibility was less than ½ mile when we arrived at Fort Adam State Park. The forecast was for partly/mostly sunny in the mid-70s so we all remained optimistic. It was shocking to look out and see the Queen Mary II moored just outside the harbor.

Now the trip began to get exciting to me. I had contacted the property manager to see if he would wave the landing fee if we just stopped on the beach to grab a quick snack and stretch. He agreed to waive the $5/person fee. When I mentioned his name to the museum curator of the day she welcomed us to explore the Light House and the island.

GREAT JOB Ken R in organizing the trip, tours and cookout!
Really Fun Paddle!
Nice company, beautiful views, great weather, bumpy water but not too bumpy..
I agree the views and hospitality at the lighthouse was a high point both in elevation and experience.
I can't imagine a better time... Only regret is more people didn't come out for it! Especially the shorter paddle option I think was unappreciated or unnoticed.
I hope this becomes a "classic paddle" we repeat next year.

Yeah, I wish I had something planned for today. It's too nice to be sitting inside editing this football video.
I got plenty of sleep last night and I'm recharged and ready to go.
Boat is still loaded on my truck, high tide is at 6:00pm. I think I'll head out somewhere local at about 3:00pm.

Hopefully I can make this trip another time.
