East of Prudence Is. - Sunday - 10/21/12 - 10:00am Launch

Post by norm »

Looks like it will be fairly nice weather on Sunday but may be a bit breezy as the day goes on. I'd like to try a launch spot I have not been to yet at Weaver Cove across from the southern end of Prudence Island.

Tide is high at 1:30, so launching at 10:00, we could ride the tide north for 3.5 hours and then ride it back south. We could either circle Prudence Island for about a 19 mile trip or stay east of Prudence and circle the east passage and go up around Hog Island near Colt State Park and then come back down on the east side of Prudence and cross at Dyer Island.

Here is a picture of the 2 Narraganset Bay routes. Red is about 19 miles, yellow is about 17 miles and would be easier to shorten.

I'm leaning toward going with the yellow route due to the wind direction and the fact that it can be shortened easier.

Here is a Google Maps link to the Weaver Cove boat ramp spot: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=41.574008,-71.287764&hl=en&ll=41.574795,-71.286711&spn=0.004655,0.009645&num=1&t=h&z=17

Here is a link to a site that describes the boat ramp and area and has additional maps: http://www.kayakaccessri.info/mapserver/portsmouth_weaver.html

Wet exit/Rescue skills are required.
Cold water clothing may be a good idea.
I would recommend at least a 15 foot boat with front and rear bulkheads and spray skirt.
Ability to paddle 17- 20 miles at a 3mph pace minimum.
This could become a difficult trip as the winds and seas build in the afternoon.
Bring a lunch, snacks, water and sunscreen.

Please reply if you plan to attend.

Joe,

There's limited daylight this time of year. You're going to have to keep up with the group. We're not slowing down or waiting for you this time.

Norn,
I will be there about 9:30-9:45.

I replied last night right after Joe replied but for some reason (most likely operator error) it did not post.
