Sunset/Moonrise Paddle/Party at the Spit - Sunday, June 23

Post by norm »

Time for an evening beach party?

Recently I was thinking about this year's full moon schedule for a sunset / moonrise paddle to the spit. Looking at the calendar, this month is the only time the full moon falls on a weekend but it's on a Sunday. The date is June 23rd. That's coming up real quick!

Here is the pertinent info:
2013-06-23 18:16 EDT -0.55 feet Low Tide
2013-06-23 20:22 EDT Sunset
2013-06-23 20:30 EDT Moonrise
2013-06-24 00:13 EDT 10.93 feet High Tide

The next time the full moon is on a weekend is in mid-October when its on a Friday night.

Somebody asked: "Why not just go a day earlier or later?" The issue is that a day early the moon rises before sunset and a day later the moon rises much later than the sun sets. See the times below.
Saturday:
2013-06-22 19:33 EDT Moonrise
2013-06-22 20:22 EDT Sunset
Sunday:
2013-06-23 20:22 EDT Sunset
2013-06-23 20:30 EDT Moonrise
Monday:
2013-06-24 20:23 EDT Sunset
2013-06-24 21:20 EDT Moonrise

So, who would like to go out to the spit for an evening beach party?

I may or may not attend this event. I'd rather do a long paddle that day and my not have the energy for the evening event. I just wanted to put the idea out there in case somebody else wants to pick it up and run with it. (Tracey has told me she is not available for this.)

I have never done moonrise-on-the-spit. I won't be doing it this time either.

Alas.

Traveling. See you guys in July.

Deb,

Glad you're interested in spearheading this gathering. It's really an easy paddle and a great time if the weather cooperates. There are probably a few trip reports about these full moon paddles. The one from last August is here: http://www.wtpaddlers.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2910

The get-together can be as complex or a simple as you want. Since it's a night before a workday, I'd vote for simple. Here are some pointers about the location in case you don't know the area, being a transplant form the north...

The put-in is at the "Driftway" in Scituate, across from the parking lot to "Widows Walk Golf Course. The official name of the spot is: "James Landing Boat Ramp", but commonly called the driftway put-in by the locals.

The spit is a big sand bar beach at the intersection of the North and South Rivers. I believe the put-in is actually the Herring River. It's a real simple paddle of about 1.3 miles. I'm sure there will be others interested...unless the Bruins are in a seventh game or something... Getting back in total darkness can be a challenge if the moon gets blocked by clouds, but it's doable.

Here is an image with the put-in marked with an "A" at the top left and the "spit" at the bottom right marked with a "B".

Hi all
I'm very happy to help with this paddle and would love to see it "take off"!
However, I haven't done the paddle at night and would only do it if there was someone who had done it before.
(Put me on Cape Ann anywhere at night and I'm a great guide ! smile) (I am the transplant from the north).
Any others interested ?

Deb,

I've decided not to do a daytime paddle on Sunday so I will be free to join you for this sunset/moonrise trip. I have done this enough times that I should be able to get back to the put-in without problems. We found it last year and I don't think it could get much darker than it was that time.

I'll see if I can lobby some more participants to join us at tonight's Hingham paddle.

Hi Norm,

I hope to make it if I can squeeze out of a family reunion unnoticed. I'll keep you posted.........

Thanks for being the "expert" on the trip!
I will definitely make it. Read the prior trip report and posting re: lamps along the way
What do you think of that? Necessary?
Weather looks great!

Yes, but it's a secret. :)

Actually, we're planning on a 7:00pm launch so that the tide is already turned and coming back in.

The weather looks great right now (11:00am), but depending on who's forecast you look at, there may be clouds and thunderstorms and wind tonight. It seems too tough to call, especially from where I live ten miles inland. So I'm planning to be there unless it's obvious that there are thunderstorms rolling through.

I think we can pack light and be on the lookout to bail from the spit if things turn nasty. We should be able to get back to the take-out in 30 minutes or less if we see bad weather moving in.
