Sakonnet River - Saturday, June 22, 2013 - 9:00am Launch
I have sent out an email to a bunch of people that I have addresses for to measure the interest in doing a full day trip on the Sakonnet River in Rhode Island this Saturday.
A lot of people are busy but six or more are available and like the idea. I probably do not want more than 10 paddlers.
The Sakonnet "River" is really a "bay" and may have some wind and wave action, especially in the afternoon if the prevailing southwest winds kick up. I have only paddled a little section of this area once last year, so be aware that this is new to me and will be a learning experience for all of us if nobody with local area knowledge joins us.
High tide is at about 7:00am, so the plan is to launch in Tiverton and ride the tide south down one coast or the other, stop for lunch and ride the tide and wind back up in the afternoon. I don't plan to go near the top of the river where it is constricted and has strong currents. There should be less than a half knot current in the areas I plan to paddle. The launch spot I've chosen was found on the RICKA website. It appears to have a fair amount of parking, is out of the way and should be free. There are other launch spots, but I'm concerned the other spots will be charging for parking or forbidding use of the beaches for kayak launching if they are opening for bathing this weekend.
I'd like to meet at the put-in at 8:30am and intend to launch at 9:00am.
At the bottom of this post is a Google Earth view with two possible trip paths. In red is about a 16 mile trip down the west coast along Newport to third beach and then back up the east coast. In yellow is a 20 mile path down the east coast to some pretty islands and a lighthouse off Sakonnet Point. We'll choose which way to go dependent on the weather forecast and the strength and interests of the group.
Here is a Google Map link to the launch spot: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=41.58245 ... 1&t=h&z=16
An address that may get you close on a car GPS is: 730 Seapowet Avenue, Tiverton, RI
Wet exit/Rescue skills are required. Ability to paddle 16-20 miles.
I would recommend at least a 15 foot boat. Bulkheads or flotation front and back required.
Bring plenty of water, snacks and a lunch. Sunscreen will hopefully be needed also.
Please reply if you are planning to attend.

GREAT place to paddle, for anyone not familiar. Been here MANY times... you will have a Wonderful Paddling day... Just FYI, there's a small cove area just north of the launch site that's warm, protected and sandy for practicing stuff, too! I'm busy this time but am looking forward to catching up with you soon. Thx for keeping me "in the loop".
Still Mind, Relaxed Breath, Pure Attention...

Didn't realize I had already signed up for another paddle. Besides my season is staring late. Went 8 miles (in rough water) yesterday. 16 may be a little much, depending on the conditions. Miss you all though.

I'd love to join you but am paddling with some recreational paddlers tomorrow. I have put in from that beach many times and there is plenty of free parking.

As I've told some of you individually, we'll take the easier, shorter, less exposed route tomorrow, shown in red on the map. We're traveling counter-clockwise in that route, to take advantage of the southwest wind on the return. I'm happy to see that the latest wind forecast on Weather Underground has been reduced by about 5 mph since earlier in the day.
We have 8 paddlers on my latest count.
See you all in the morning.
