Little Compton Coast - Saturday - 7/13/13 - 8:30am

Post by norm »

Planning a 15 to 18 mile trip for Saturday. Launch at 9:00am from Sakonnet Harbor, head south to explore Sakonnet Lighthouse, East and West Islands, then continue east along the Little Compton shoreline to find a beach to land on for lunch. Could possibly continue all the way to the Westport River entrance and climb the Knubble if people are interested and timing is right (slack at 1:26pm at Westport River mouth).

Warning - I have not launched from this harbor before, so I don't know if it's crazy busy on a Saturday morning. Checked it out on a weekday last year and it's an excellent spot but parking may be limited or difficult on the weekend.

Here is a Google Maps link that shows the put-in spot at Sakonnet Harbor. The big lot across the street from the put-in is for vehicles with trailers only. The spot with the green arrow is one of the parking lots for cars. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=41.463678,-71.192909&num=1&t=h&z=18 I couldn't find an address for that stretch of the street, but 180 Sakonnet Point Road, Little Compton, RI will get you close and then just continue to the harbor.

Here is a link to a story about the history of West Island: http://newenglandboating.com/destinations/video-in-search-of-the-west-island-club.html

Wet exit/Rescue skills are required. Ability to paddle 15-18 miles.
Ability to perform surf landings and launches may be necessary also.
I would recommend at least a 15 foot boat. Bulkheads or flotation front and back required.
Bring plenty of water, snacks and a lunch. Sunscreen will hopefully be needed also.

Please reply if you are planning to attend.

Below is a photo with the proposed trip in yellow - this is about 16 miles. The red line is the additional possible extension of the trip over to the Knubble, but it would add another 5 miles to the trip.

Parking should be okay. Most of the vehicles there have trailers and use the larger lot on the south side of the road. There are two small lots on the north side that will fit six cars total with overflow along the curb area. It's also possible to use the larger trailer lot and park two or three vehicles in one spot.

I've been there many times with another group, Parking can get a bit tight but but not ridiculous... if you arrive early enough, I've had no problem unloading up close to launch site- then usually move my car onto the street. There's never been a problem 'street' parking before. It's a WONDERFUL trip... Can be nice 'rock gardening... bring helmets, if you're inclined! Now I can't decide which trip to do, this weekend. Hmmmmm!

I'd like to join you. I've launched from here numerous times, no parking issues. As Linda says, can be nice surfing off the point - I will have my helmet along! I'm careful around those rocks - the waves can be very big and unexpected when swell is rolling in.

Norm,

I'd like to join you. Josko gave me a heads up for this trip. I'm new to the WTPaddlers, but have done a good deal of paddling with Charles River Canoe and Kayak, the AMC and Josko, including his recent circumnav of Naushon Island (24mi). given parking discussions, should getting there by 8 work?

Wow, everyone seems to like this trip plan. The count is up to 16 people. I hope the weather cooperates and lets us paddle. As one or two have suggested, bring a helmet if you plan to play around the rocks or do some surfing.

I'll be carpooling, picking up 3 people and using my trailer, so I won't be arriving till about 8:30am. If others want to get there sooner, that's fine. It's pretty obvious where to gear up on the beach if you click on the Google Maps link at the beginning of this thread and look at the picture. Hopefully we can all be ready and launch at 9:00am.

The participants I know of are:
Me
Tracey
Bob
Jordan
Ken R.
Kate
Josko
Bea
Sue
Jim
Jeff
Linda
Abby
Steve
Pam
Dennis

See you all in the morning.
