Neds Point to West Island - Saturday 7/27/13 - 9:00am Launch
How about a visit to West Island in Fairhaven with a little extended trip around Sconticut Neck for those that want to go a little further and take a look into Padanaram from a different angle. I propose we meet at Neds Point at 8:30am and launch at 9:00am. We can head to the beach on West Island directly or circle around the north side of the island first. Direct route is about 5 miles and the route around the top is about 7 miles. Swinging around the next neck would be another 6 to 8 miles. For those that only want a 10 to 12 mile day, they can plan on an extended beach stay while some of us continue on around the next point and maybe find some waves to ride when we come back to the beach. We can then have lunch and all head back to Neds point together.
So, the trip could be 10 - 12 miles if you want to spend a few hours on the beach or it could be 16 - 19 miles if you want to paddle more. The conditions could be rough or could be tame, it's too early to tell by the long range forecast.
Wet exit/Rescue skills are required. Ability to paddle 12-20 miles.
Ability to perform surf landings and launches may be necessary also.
I would recommend at least a 15 foot boat. Bulkheads or flotation front and back required.
Bring plenty of water, snacks and a lunch. Sunscreen will hopefully be needed also.
Please reply if you are planning to attend and please say whether you'd like the extended beach stay or more paddling.
I can provide directions to the launch spot later if anyone needs them. I'll be a bit out of touch Wednesday and Thursday with no access to a PC. I'll answer any questions Friday or if it's a general question about the area, others could speak up in my absence.
Below is a Google Earth picture of the area. The red leg is about 5 miles. The orange loop is about 7.5 miles. The yellow leg is about 7 miles. We'll see what people want to do at launch time and decide there which route to take.

Sounds like fun. We will be there...if the water is uber-warm, we might opt for rolling/playing around or longer paddle might work too.
Thanks Norm,
Steve

I assume you mean Saturday the 27th (not the 28th which is Sunday).
If so, I have to decline as I have a previous engagement.

Yes, the trip is on Saturday. Sorry for the error. I'll fix it now. I was trying to get it posted quickly after getting my kayak camping gear ready for a night on Lovells Island and didn't get around to posting it till after midnight. I could have sworn I checked the date on a calendar...

Deb - Yes, deciding when we get there is fine.
In case there are others watching this post to see if anyone is choosing the short paddle, I know there is at least one person that is planning to spend time on the beach rather than do the long paddle.

I have to apologize Norm.
Last night you were right about Audrey's response about this paddle.
She did send it by e-mail

Well at least you're keeping busy? Isn't that satisfying enough?
