Onset to Buttermilk Bay and Back on Sunday Aug 25th

Post by Ken R »

I haven't been to Onset in several years and I love to explore Buttermilk Bay. Tides are fairly favorable for a day long exploration. I'm thinking about 10 to 15 miles interconnecting these two bays. The exact route will be determined that morning based on several factors. Weather is forecast to be Sunny, with a high near 76. Tide is high at Noon.

The launch spot is Riverside Beach. An address that gets you close is 41 Riverside Drive, Onset, MA.

Arrive at 8:30 for a 9:00 am launch.
One crew member from each boat MUST attend the skippers briefing at 8:50, no exceptions

If you are a 7-12 mile paddler and wish to come, you may. There are several loop areas that you can fall back or take a break to shorten the overall trip. Both of these bays are quite pleasant 5-8 mile paddles depending on how closely you follow the shore.

If enough people are interested in a shorter route and someone would like to raise their hand to lead, I’d have no problem if some wanted to just stay in Onset and do 5-7mile.

Be forewarned the area between Onset Bay and Buttermilk bay has heavy boat traffic and can have waves, current and wind.

Please reply if you intend to come.

Distances on map attached:
Beach to RR bridge at the entrance to Buttermilk Bay. 3Miles
Loop around Buttermilk Bay 5miles it can be stretched
Return route is 3 miles but can be stretched to 6,7,8….

Requirements:
Wet exit/Rescue skills are required. You will accept assistance to reenter your boat if capsized!
15 foot boat with front and rear bulkheads and spray skirt.
Ability to paddle 10 - 15 miles with 1 break plus lunch break
Comfortable and able to overcome short stretches of 1.5knt of current
Bring a lunch, snacks, water and sunscreen, bug spray is a good idea too.

Maybe I should have promised to cross the cannel and do 20 miles in 3' surf, so more paddlers would join.

Please confirm.

Well, maybe I should not be a trip leader.
@9:02pm Saturday night I got an emergency service call from a hospital in Brunswick Maine.
By 9:52pm I had diagnosed the problem, and will most likely need to be in Brunswick Maine ASAP.
It is 3 hours driving each way, if I leave by 11:00 I'll be there at 2:10, it is a 10 minute repair, I could be back by 5:10 am.
Not!
I don't know what to tell you, this is my work, this is my life.. I'm on-call 24/7- 365+
Attached are the maps I had planed, unfortunately I may not be there.
There is an alternative route that I have plotted going around Toby Island if the West End is Calm.

Sorry to hear that Ken. There are still 4 of us, and I would like to go. I have charts of this area, so we should be OK. Also, if someone can print these out, or download to a mobile device, that would be good.

I will be leaving the house by 7:30. If you are NOT going, please post by then, as I do not want to drive all the way down there to go alone.

11:12 Pm Saturday, I am leaving for Brunswick Maine. I will be driving through the night and ..... may make it to the paddle. But if I do not have a great time.
P.S. unfortunately I am not driving the truck with the kayak on it, if I where I could stop in Falmouth Maine to see Norm.

I am Truly sorry but as the owner of a small business I must do what I must do.
