Wareham - Sunday, 10/20/13 - 9:00am - Aggressive Paddle
The wind forecast for Sunday is from the west at 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 and sees to 2 feet. We're planning an aggressive paddle into the wind from Wareham to Bird Island in Marion and then ride the wind and waves back. This could be a 15 to 20 mile trip.
We're hoping the launch spot is ok to use this time of year. It is probably for residents only the rest of the year. An address that should work in a GPS is: 59 Oak Street, Wareham.
Here is a Google Maps link to the launch location:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=59+oak+s ... 1&t=h&z=17
Plan to arrive at 9:00am for a launch at 9:30am.
Wet exit/Rescue skills are required. Cold water clothing required.
Ability to paddle 17-20 miles at a 4 mph pace.
I would recommend at least a 15 foot boat. Bulkheads or flotation front and back required.
Please reply if you plan to attend.

I'm the other part of "we're" ...I'm there.
Maybe in the future we will meet at the greasy spoon dinner for breakfast before the paddle.

I'm always up for a greasy breakfast. You know of a place? I'll be there!

Hi Norm,
That launch site is the Tempest Knob Boat Ramp. There is no 'resident' sticker required, however, there is a $5.00 launch fee - you put your money in a supplied envelope, write your registration on the envelope, and put it in the box. BEWARE - the Harbor Master does check these and will write out a fine for $30.00 (I know this from experience!!!).

Dave,
Do you know a better place in that area that does NOT charge 5 bucks?

Hi Ken,
Here are some possibilities although they may not fit with Norm's plans.
(1) 41.726444 -70.674524
Little Harbor .... resident's only (no fee) during summer. I doubt they check after labor day. Huge parking lot.
(2) 41.739106 -70.715732 and 41.738382 -70.717464
Swifts Beach ... once again, should be no problem this time of year.
(3) 41.757283 -70.713024
Wareham Center ... carry Kayak across railroad tracks to small launch area. Note... you will have to go under a bridge which might be a tight fit if launching at high tide. However, if you are travelling thru Wareham Center to the Tempest Knob boat ramp, you will be passing this area and could take a quick look.

Ken,
If you can check these alternate locations and choose a different launch spot, please go ahead. I am at a football game for the next three to four hours and can't check anything from here. Will check in again when I get home tonight.

Norm,
let's meet at the original location. If we need to change I will have the other locations on the map.

Re: Wareham - Sunday, 10/20/13 - 9:00am - Aggressive Paddle
Thanks again Dave for the alternate launch locations. We met at the boat ramp location and decided to use Swifts Beach instead. Very nice launch spot there. Too bad you can only use it off-season, but it turned out to be much easier to launch and land there than the boat ramp would have been.
We didn't do the trip as originally planned because the wind direction was not from the west as forecast, it was from the north or north-northwest. We still made it to Bird Island, but didn't stay there for lunch - too smelly and breezy. We back-tracked and had lunch at Piney Point Beach Club, which we didn't realize was private till we were leaving...
Then we went up into Wareham past the Nantucket Light Ship - how many of those are there?
Our total distance for the day was only 13 miles, but part of that was into 10-15 mph winds with gusts that were probably about 20. Glad we were on the water instead of watching the Patriot game!
