Charles River Basin - 4/28/2014 - 3:45pm

Post by norm »

I am bringing my boat to work tomorrow and plan to do some paddling on the Charles River Basin after work. I get off work at about 3:00, so I figure I can get there by 4:00 or sooner. Planning to launch near the Charles River Canoe and Kayak kiosk across from Harvard Stadium at 1071 Soldiers Field Road. Hope to be on the water by 4:30.

Wet exit/Rescue skills are required.
I would recommend at least a 15 foot boat.
Ability to paddle 9-12 miles.
Proper clothing and gear for cold water temps.

Please reply if you are planning to attend.

Ken and I had a good time out on the Charles on Monday evening. Conditions were pretty nice. A little wind, but nothing too bad. Water was chilly but no gloves or pogies needed. Went all the way to the locks and back.

Saw an interesting sailboat near the MIT boathouse. Some sort of sailing hydrofoil that lifted completely out of the water and at first looked like it was flying till we got closer and we could see the centerboard and rudder extending down into the water. It was usually too far away when I tried to get a picture, but I got one fuzzy shot that's not too bad. I got a couple videos of it also that I'll upload and add to a trip report later. (Found a video online of a similar sailing hydrofoil that was titled "Moth Foiling")

Sorry, was working on a big monitor when I uploaded that one and didn't use my usual resizing tool.
