Friday July 11th. Plymouth to Gurnet Light
Friday 7/11
We will launch at 9am from Nelson beach in Plymouth and paddle to the Gurnet Light and back. PLease arrive in time to launch at 9am.
This is about a 10 mile round trip.
The crossing at Bug light is relatively short but can get dicey.
Wet exit/Rescue skills are required. Ability to paddle 10+ miles.
Ability to paddle at a 3+ mph speed for 4 hours.
I would recommend at least a 16 foot boat. Bulkheads or flotation front and back required.
Please post here if you plan on joining me. I will firm it up in a couple of weeks.

I hope to be ready to paddle by then. Now in the second cast for my left arm (and I'm a lefty) ...a fine sky blue to go with my Summer wardrobe. I should know where I stand a week before this. We'll see if the arm is up to it after several months of encasement.

Re: Friday July 11th. Plymouth to Gurnet Light
...and now I'm out.
Just got my third cast -- a nice summery red for the season. Next week I'm in for an MRI, consultation with hand surgeons...and the possibility of driving a screw in to get the hand healing...or even some kind of bone graft. Best case is that the MRI will show some bone growth and I'll just hang out with yet another cast for God knows how long. I am avoiding surgery at all costs.
All this is to say that the kayak stays in its rack for the forseeable time. My wife will be out of town for several weeks, so maybe I'll swing over for a pint or two during PPR at some point.
Ugh.

Well that really sucks. Looking forward to seeing you at PPR, though.

Hi Mike,
I wish you a quickened recovery. I know you don't want to hear it, but if you need a screw to get the bones to heal, it will make for a much quicker recovery.
I hope the third cast will be a charm for you!
Good luck!
Paddle with a big smile, its contagious

I am now unsure if I will be able to make it. If I am not there by 8:45 or so, not coming, have to work, so do not wait up.

Re: Friday July 11th. Plymouth to Gurnet Light
Coming up from maryland next week on vacation. Any local knowledge for this trip? I know it's over but I would like to try it. Can I park car at this Nelson park? Place to stop at gurney light? Thnks.
Re: Friday July 11th. Plymouth to Gurnet Light
Yes, there is parking at Nelson beach. Earlier is better. If you have 4 wheel drive you can drive down to the water if the tide is out to drop off your boat. Cross the harbor and make your way North towards the tip of Plymouth beach . Cross over to Saquish, take some photos of bug light, watch out for the boat traffic. At Saquish, head east towards the Gurnet, follow the shore or cut straight across. Before you turn the corner into open ocean there is a small beach. You can stop there and walk up to check out the light. You can't see the light from the beach but follow the obvious path and stay right, it's not far away.
If you get there at the right time, you may need to help a couple of old ladies push their boat off of the trailer so they can go lobstering.
If you make the trip, let us know how you made out.

Once you cross over to the Saquish side, there aren't many places where you can NOT land. It's primarily sandy beach.

A few minutes of video I took on the trip. Of interest only to people who were there or children from Nebraska who have never seen water.

Re: Friday July 11th. Plymouth to Gurnet Light
Thank you VERY MUCH for the local knowledge and the video. Heading up from MD tomorrow to Mass and will be staying in Green Harbor for the week. Always wanted to Yak that area as my uncle had a boat when i was a little kid and he used to take me flounder fishing around the point at high tide. I remember it like it was yesterday and would love to yak the area. I'll hopefully be able to make the run on a good clear day during the week. Thanks again, very much appreciated !!!!!!!!!!

I just have one question. How did Ken see and enjoy the video before it was even posted. Is he magical or something?

I don't know, unless Pat edited it after I commented.

I'm stumped. Even if I edited it, it wouldn't change position in the thread. Youtube says I uploaded the video at 10:40am, so I think the time on mine is correct. The only thing that makes any sense is that Ken is an alien with special powers.

Maybe his account is in the wrong time zone.

I just checked, that is correct and my posting time matches my clock time. Some rainy Thursday I would be willing to listen to someone teach me all there is to know about this type of website. I will admit that I only use the very basic functions.

So if I change the time zone on my computer, does that mean I can go back in time and order something different for dinner last night?
