BB Sandbar Bash 2014 7/20 <<-- date correction

Post by Ken R »

I have heard that the beach party on the sandbar in Plymouth Bay is scheduled for Saturday 7/19.
I am not planning to paddle just letting those of you that might be interested know. In my opinion the best was to enjoy this trip would be to get to Plymouth beach before 9 AM (when they start collecting for parking) then go to the very end of the parking lot, there is a sign that says " no lifeguard beyond this point", you can launch from here. The advantage of launching from here is the you are not restricted by the tide. The disadvantage of launching from either Nelson or
Stephen Field is that you can't return until the tide comes back in.
Have fun.

Would an early morning trip from Plymouth Beach around the point and down to White Horse Beach be reasonable? A break and then hopefully a downwind ride to BB sandbar for an arrival around noon. Looks like it would be a 9 to 11 mile trip. I have not been around the point before but I know there is a safety zone at the power plant. I'm curious if landing at White Horse beach could be an issue or not.

I know you wouldn't be paddling Ken, but any advice you or anyone else might have is appreciated.

Norm,
This is a great idea!
It is my plan "B".
I would also propose a tailgate PPR in the beach parking lot.
Even If Kit and I don't paddle we would probably make it to PPR.

Local info:
You will find large white buoys about 50yrds apart as the exclusion zone around the Power Plant.
The current is generally less than .75 knts on both the ebb and flood tides.
White Horse Beach will make a good destination. Beyond WHB is an area called Maryann rock and Manomet point the current can kick up over 5 knts.

White Horse Beach has no lifeguards or restrictions regarding landing a kayak. Usually the only people on the beach there are the vacation rental people. There are no parking lots there other than a couple of vacant house lots that the owners charge for parking, so no huge crowds.

Russ and I will be there, but we will not arrive by kayak. Looking forward to the fun!

Hi Norm

Your plan sounds interesting . Where is Plymouth beach parking. I only know Nelsons.
If there is a parking fee, can we carpool?

Rt 3 South to exit #4 (on left)
follow exit to RT 3A north (there will be a spot that you make a U-turn,
the beach will be on your left in less than 1/4 mile.

Go to the very far end of the parking lot.

Ken described the location for you. He also mentioned earlier that parking is free if you get there before the fee collector at 9:00am.
I cannot carpool with anyone because I don't know what time I will leave or what my plans will be after the party.
I'm thinking of an 8:00am start. Not sure yet if that is arrive at 8:00 or launch at 8:00.

Here is what I plan to do before the BB Bash ON SUNDAY 7/20/14:

Arrive at Plymouth Beach at 8:00am

Launch at 8:30am

Paddle to White Horse Beach and stop there before going around Manomet Point or turn around at 10:00am if that comes first. Distance is about 5 miles.

At 10:00am or sooner, head back to Browns Bank to get to the party at about noon.

Find other turkeys who are already at the sandbar.

Stay for a few hours and enjoy the festivities.

Paddle back to the beach where I put in. I'll leave whenever I feel like it. I don't plan to group up for the trip back unless somebody wants to wait for me to be ready to leave or leave when I happen to be ready.

I may do some shopping on the way home, so I'm not going to offer to carpool with anyone.

Be aware there are likely going to be multiple surf launches and landings. I don't know how bad it will be but if I recall correctly, there will be on-shore winds at all locations.

Regular safety gear and rules apply...

If you would like to join me, please reply here so I know you are coming. (Ken - you can't be 2 places at once unless you really are an alien.)
