basic navigation Thursday 9th July 2015

Post by Briggsy »

Is anyone interested in a very basic navigation explanation evening on a Thursday night at Hingham? My idea is, on land, basic chart orientation, true north/magnetic north explanation, compass use with a hiking compass and deck mounted compass, ranges and dead reckoning, followed by a paddle in Hingham harbor demonstrating and using the on land theory.
I am not an instructor but understand chart and compass navigation and am willing to share what I know.
I was thinking of a group of either 6 or 8 (3 pairs or 4 pairs would work well) and I was thinking that newer members of the Wild Turkeys would maybe benefit. I figured the "old hands" would already know this stuff.
Not sure of any dates yet, just trying to gauge interest.
Thanks

I've taken a navigation class but have never had to put it to good use. What I've learned is likely very stale and I'd love to get in on this.

OK, I'm going to do a recon trip in Hingham harbor in the next week or so and will post something then. Never paddled Hingham Harbor so just want to get my bearings (pun intended).

Went to Hingham yesterday to scout the area and have picked Thursday 9th July as the date for a basic navigation/compass/chart skills evening(weather permitting). High tide at Hingham is 6.24pm and I am told that is perfect for launching from the beach.
I have a laminated chart for each person but you will need a hiking type compass like this
http://media.rei.com/media/726501.jpg
If you have a deck mounted compass as well, thats great, if not you don't need to get one just for this.
My plan is to get the boats ready to paddle. spend some time on land looking at various charts, learning how the compass works and aligning the charts with and without a compass, and practising taking bearings etc. Once on the water we will probably paddle around the closer islands using those skills and seeing how different it is on water under way. I don't see us paddling far, we probably won't make it as far as Bumpkin.
There is a limit of 8 people
Pat, Is a 5pm meet time too early for the Thursday gang, what is the usual time to meet there ?

So far Chip, Pat,Tortoise and Joy have said they are interested.

Thanks

I would like to attend. I know how to navigate when I have a chart table and all the tools used when sailing on much larger boats but have never learned the minimalistic method used when kayaking.

Briggsy,
Regretfully I must withdraw. I've got a medical test scheduled for Friday that requires preparation the day before.

I'm a new paddler to WT and would like to join you starting 7/9. If there's still room, may I also be a part of the compass/navigation "class"? Look forward to learning and paddling with you.

Hi Caryn, Pat has had to drop out so that leaves a space for you on Thursday.
For everyone, I intend to spend a fair bit of time on dry land so if you want to bring pen and paper to make notes it's up to you.
See you Thurs

It was fun paddling with you all. I hope you managed to retain some of the information, the time seemed to fly by way to quickly. I think the most important things to try to remember is the latitude scale ( 1 nautical mile equals one sixtieth of a degree (1 minute) ) and that one knot is one nautical mile per hour. Also that our average speed is between 3 and 4 knots, you will have to time this yourself. If you know that, you can begin planning trips knowing how long it will take to get from A to B. As far as the compass goes, simply converting a compass bearing from the map to what you see around you is a useful skill. Practice is the key!!
The basic book I showed you is this one

http://www.amazon.com/Sea-Kayak-Navigat ... navigation

The source for charts is here

http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChar ... Charts.htm

scroll down and select your chart, then save as a pdf file on your computer and print the pages you need.

Caryn, I hope you enjoyed your first Wild Turkey paddle.

pm me with any nav questions any time

See you folks on the water some time
