Surf Martha's Vineyard (Thurs, 15 Sept)

Late summer in Vineyard Sound brings afternoon seabreezes to break up the doldrums. As luck would have it, the typical sou'wester is perfectly opposed to the sound's stout ebb tide, and timing on September 15th is well aligned for a lunch on Martha's Vineyard bracketed by surfing stacked waves at Middle Ground, a tidal overfall (see attached chart).

We'll paddle ~3 nmi out to the eastern end of Middle Ground, catching the beginning of the ebb (which comes on quickly). Play and surf the shoal, with the option to rest in the back eddy along the island at any time. Lunch on the beach. When we've had our fill of tiderace, we'll surf the seabreeze back to our put-in for a total of 10-12 nmi.

Launch 10:00am, Thursday, 15 September at Trunk River Beach, Falmouth, MA (Nearby GPS-able address: 155 Oyster Pond Rd. There is an outhouse at the put-in). This is a level 3 trip with the likely option, for those who want it, of going into areas with larger waves. Please RSVP. Hope to see you there!

UPDATE: Since the wind forecast is a bit unsettled (totally dependent on the tropical storm track), we may not do Middle Ground (which is good in SW). But my goal will be to find some good lumps / surfing conditions in whatever wind direction mother nature gives us. Woods Hole has tideraces that pop up in just about all the wind/tide combinations!

UPDATE 2: to make the most of the NE wind, we'll launch at 0800 from the beach directly west of the Woods Hole Yacht Club (street parking).
