Newport Sept 17 2017
I would like to propose a multi-level trip from Fort Adam in Newport RI on September 17th with a Picnic/Cook out following the paddle
For the less aggressive, who would like to attend, this location offers up to a 7 mile trek without leaving the inner harbor or crossing channels. For the longer distance paddlers may option are possible by heading north into the Narragansett Bay. This area offers endless variations with the actual route being dictated by weather the day of the event.
The harbor itself is spectacular to paddle because you can be within a few feet of everything from multi-million dollar yachts, sail race machines and antique schooners. There are also several mansions along the harbor.
I envision the group going for the longer paddle could launch at 9:00 and the other group or groups could launch at their discretion with the expectation of returning around or close to the same time for some type of cook out.
I would be on the distance group so someone would need to step up to somewhat coordinate a green and yellow team.
The air temps are weaning so all paddlers should be competent Wet exit/assisted rescue competent.
Sea conditions in Narragansett Bay can vary drastically between early morning, noon and late afternoon so do not try to exceed your abilities.
for additional info see trip reports forum.
Both group would require:
PFD to be worn when on the water.
Wet exit/Rescue skills are required.
I would recommend at least a 16 foot boat with front and rear bulkheads and spray skirt.
Ability to paddle 10-17 miles 5-9 miles for the less aggressive group.
This could be an easy trip or there might be tough headwinds on the return leg
Your input is welcome to help make this a memorable day on the water for all.

Hey Ken
Thanks for posting- Fairly certain I'm in and will confirm. Sounds like a great time!
Would the longer group make it to Castle Hill Light? It's on my long bucket list. Feel free to email.

Good Morning Ken,
Please count me in. I haven't done this trip with the group, and I'm looking forward to it. I'll have to get the scoop on the cook out so I can help with the festivities.

In the past I have brought a propane stove and a charcoal grill. Both were available for everyone to use.

I have been corrected, the last few years we've just done snacks and sandwiches.

Thanks Ken,
Which parking area within the park are we meeting at? Did I miss the routes for the day somewhere? You can feel free to email if that would be easier.
Have a good evening

There are no set routes at this time. The conditions that day will dictate where we head.

There seams to be an issue with the old link to the launch spot. We launch from the beach. As you come through the main entrance follow it around to the right. There is a large building with bathrooms at the beach. You can try to use the following address in a GPS- 38-56 Fort Adams Dr, Newport, RI 02840

Re: Newport Sept 17 2017
I am interested in joining the paddle. Depending on final mileage and route I could be up for the longer paddle. Looking forward to meeting some new people!
Re: Newport Sept 17 2017
It looks like there will be 2 groups. The shorter will be 6-9 miles weaving trough the wharfs among the luxury yachts at dock with some time at Rose Island Light.
The longer paddle group is being headed up by Bob Clark. He would like to get out into Narragansett bay and log 12-18 miles. Conditions will dictate where each group ends up. Ideally we'll rendezvous back at Rose Is. or the beach at fort Adams. The attached shows 13.5 nm that he is aiming for but conditions will dictate.

I am in and traveling with Ray, a paddling neighbor, so that makes two. Are we doing lunch on the water, or picnic after? Romaine

We are planning a picnic after but you might want to bring paddle nutrition as well.

Hey all
If your doing the longer paddle I suggest bringing some snacks, lunch and fluids to hydrate. There will be stops along the way to snack.
I'm guessing we're doing BIB 9am so plan on an 8:30 meet up. We can picnic after and discuss the great time in the water.
Cheers

Hi
I'll be having lunch and snacks when resting during paddle break(s) but will bring a shrimp ring for anyone who wishes to share after paddle.

Yes! Everyone thanks for a great day! Thanks Ken for planning this trip and teaching me how to get out of my kayak on a high dock, plus playing limbo going under the docks.

Hi everyone
Was this a private paddle? I haven't seen anything in the "upcoming trips" and I've been out of the loop for the Thursday night meets. Maybe it was planned Thursday night at PPR. Just wanted to be sure I'm not missing where things might get posted. Looks like great time!
