Greetings All,

It's time to announce the first Skills Night for the 2011 season.

Thursday May 5th. will be our official kick off for the seasons skills sessions.

This is still early in the season, and dressing for cold water immersion is essential. Wetsuits, and or preferrably dry suits are mandatory. Dress appropriatly, you'll be more comfortable, warmer and most importantly, you'll enjoy yourself a whole lot more.

Another personal comfort recommendation, bring nose plugs and or goggles for your wet practices, you'll be glad you did.

The bi weekly plan is to arrive by 6:00 PM (during April and into May 5:00 PM), and play-practice till dusk , or until you can't stand emptying the boat again. Last year, many consistently were able to start around 5:00PM throughout the season to enjoy more daylight and warmer temps .

Where this is the first skills session of the season, plan on bringing appropiate cool water attire, until the water temperatures are more comfortable.

These sessions are very informal, and lot of fun. We practice number of skills, from a first wet exit, basic paddle strokes, to rolling your kayak. People come whenever they want, work on whatever they want, either in groups or alone. We are fortunate to have an increasing number of very skilled paddlers always willing to help out other folks with new skills or just spotting each other.

Last years skill session participation was great and our hope this season will be too!

The location to start this year will be at Camp Kiwanee in Hanson.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Camp+Kiwanee,+Hanson,+MA&aq=0&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=57.118084,135.263672&ie=UTF8&hq=Camp+Kiwanee,+Hanson,+MA&hnear=Camp+Kiwanee,+Hanson,+Massachusetts+02341&z=15

We're looking forward to meeting many of the recently joined members, and look forward to seeing you on the water.

The water temperature at Camp Kiwanee yesterday (4-27) was 62 degrees.

I'm sure some rain is scheduled for next thursday also. :(

Just went there for a noontime roll session. I was surprised by how not-cold the water was. I didn't use gloves, but did wear dry suit and tuilik - definite overkill.

The skills are very rusty. I'm going to try to get there often and re-discover all my rolls. I hope lots of people come and help me :)

Greetings all,

I won't be able to go play in Hanson tomorrow due to work commitments - travel to CT for the day.

Please take advantage of the early season and get your practice in, I'm sure some other die hards will be there to play and offer some training.

Have fun!

John, this is an all-volunteer activity. There's always a chance that it might not happen, and it's a risk that you have to have to be willing to accept. If the risk is too great, you've got to decide for yourself whether it's worth it to come. Jordan can't be responsible for calling you.

Sorry I couldn't make it to Hanson tonight. Aggravated a knee injury over the weekend and can't really stand up straight. Thought I'd give Hanson a try, but decided at the last minute that I'd rather rest it more and try for paddling on the weekend.

Jordan - does your shoulder doctor do knees?

Well, let's be honest here. TRACEY practiced rescue skills. The rest of us practiced giving advice while staying dry in our boats.

I expect to be there, somewhere around 5:30-6. Will not be staying for PPR after. I'll be practicing rolls and then will be available to help others if anyone desires it.

I've seen you play golf. "Debauchery" is the right word.

I'm planning to be there tonight. I might skip PPR this week in favor of heading home early for some sleep.

Once again work has won! Up until 4:30 I planned on attending tonight but will have to wait
until next time.
I am off call Monday morning and plan on meeting anyone who is in Hingham next Thursday.
In the mean time I will work on getting myself used to my Kayak with small trips
around home.....

Have fun

Tracy was out there hustling to learn a roll. She is one determined woman, so I am sure she'll work it out this summer. I was pleased to meet Jane who was in a skin-on-frame she'd built herself, with a greenland paddle. She peeled off several lovely greenland-style rolls. Ron was nailing one roll after another (I think it's time he got into some surfing). I met some new folks (to me) and enjoyed the company of not-new folks. Chris is always good for rolling as well as instruction. He was hammering off the on- and off-side handpaddle rolls. And I met Roy on the shore when I was loading up my boat, who wanted to join us in future. It really was a lovely evening.

I hope you can join us again soon Jordan, when you have both bionic shoulders ready.

It was a wonderful evening.
Great weather, warm water, and excellent company.
Sorry you had to miss it, Jordan.

Kate, I can't thank you enough for all the time
and patience you bestowed upon me last night.
You are an incredible paddler and you have the
gift to instruct. I hope to see you at the skills sessions
all the time.
Chris, you are amazing, also. Thanks for your help.

Hi Kate et al,

I've got my entire staff working on getting myself into paddling and rolling shape ASAP. More than likely it will be 12-16 weeks before I'm cleared to swing a paddle.

In the mean time I'll be watching the fun from the shore / boat ramp - dock.

Keep practicing and playing everyone, there's so many wonderfully skilled people that are there, that you can learn from and have fun with.

Enjoy the season!!

Hi Gif,

Yes, they're still on this season. Usually, I've been anchoring them, but this season I've only been able to watch with a shoulder still on the mend. There are several regulars in addition to Kate and Chris who help those who are looking to expand their repertoire of paddling and rescue skills.

It's a lot of fun, and you would be a welcomed additions to sessions.

I believe the next scheduled evening is August 11th unless the Hingham Tide Timing requires us to change up to avoid a Thursday evening with a dead low tide during the paddle.

It's still in Hanson / Camp Kiwanee

Hope to see you soon.

Thanks Jordan. It's a bit of a trip for me from down here on the Cape. Drove up there last fall and only one person was there, so no go. I'll plan on August 11th. Got a new boat and have to learn some tricks. Tks ... Gif
