Navigation class & field work Tuesday June 19 @ 6:30 pm FULL

Post by NorwayLady »

Johnysmoke has offered to teach a navigation class for the Wild Turkeys. It is a two part class with the first part being a "classroom" session, and the second part on the water. I have offered our house for the classroom part, and the water part will be some place in the Boston Harbor.

I am just starting a thread to gauge the interest, and John will add more details about how he plans to teach the class.

The first session will take place in Marshfield on Tuesday June 19 at 7:00 pm. My address and contact info will be pm'd you after "signing up". The class is free. We will have PPR here after the class. We can either call in for pizzas or throw some burgers on the grill. BYOB.

I'm interested. First session tonight? I can be there. Will not need PPR as I will have dinner before coming over.

I just sent a private message to you so you can see how it works. Notice in the top left corner under the Wild Turkey Paddlers logo, beside the "Logout" button, you now have a notice that says "1 new message". Click on that (any time) to change to the messaging window where you can retrieve your messages, save them, delete them or compose new ones.

Hope this helps,

This is the plan for Tuesday evening. John: please let me know if this needs to be changed.

We will throw some burgers and hot dogs on the grill around 6:30 pm. The class will start around 7:15- 7:30 pm. If you have a navigation chart of the Boston Harbor feel free to bring it. Any other navigation tools such as a compass would be great too. Paper and pen too (if your memory is as bad as mine)

This class is now full, but I'll be happy to start a waiting list:

Instructor: John
Host: Bea

Norm
Sue
Pat
Tracey
Ron
Chip
Abbey
Steve
Deb
Sandy

I will provide all the stuff for BBQ (hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, condiments etc). Sue has offered to bring a potato salad. Tracey: feel free to bring an appetizer or dessert. Anyone else...feel free to bring anything (but you don't have to!) Bring yourself and BYOB.

A volunteer to man the grill would be great.

I will pm you my street address and home phonenumber.

uh-oh Steve can not make it as well. A last minute conflict has come up.
If there is anyone else on the waiting list please tell them.

I plan to be there but probably not stay for food. Friends and learning new stuff is plenty for my plate.
sending Bea a pm to make sure this gets through to her.

I am starting to look like a maybe. You may need a backup grillmaster. If someone is on the list they should probably take the spot. Otherwise, I will do my best to get there.

OK. If you are a no-show I'll see if there are other Turkeys with BBQ skills. Mine are not that great.

The navigation was fine but we could have used a better grill-master. :)

3 of us did a little practical test trip out to the Graves Light on Wednesday and made it back ok too. :D

It was so hot and hazy, we couldn't see the Graves Light from Hull Gut, but it became visible by the time we got out to the Brewsters. Sue got here first up close visit via kayak to Boston and Graves Lighthouses.

After feeding John a burger, potato salad, pasta salad, a couple of beer, a few cookies and a couple of scoops of icecream (just to mention a few), he started cranking out all sorts of great info. Abby had brought a huge chart over Boston Harbor which we put down on the table and gathered around. John covered how to identify boat channels and how to cross them safely. How to look for landmarks (in coastal Maine there are none), and how to make mental notes of your surroundings. How to estimate distance by using simple tools such as a chart and string. How to paddle from point to point in fog....Just to mention a few. He also suggested checking YouTube for tutorials on how to use a compass.

Thank you, John. It was great.

Thank you all for coming!
