Skills 2013 Hanson / Starting May 23rd
Greetings All,
The Thursday Night Skills Sessions have become a recurring seasonal club activity, and we're getting ready to start the 2013 season!
We're proposing that we start these on May 23rd at Camp Kiwanee. The water should be warmed to a reasonable temperature for early season skills by then.
As always we recommend the use of cold water attire just in case it’s still cool, we'd strongly suggest bringing some nose plugs. You'll appreciate them after the first dunk or two.
These are casual, fun, completely flexible sessions where anyone and everyone can work on what they wish to, either alone or with the help of some the many skilled and talented people that have become regulars over the years.
Practice your paddle strokes, self / assisted rescues, work on that high brace, and for those who enjoy getting wet, learning to roll might be fun for you too!
This our clubs way of “paying it forward”, to offer to all of our members and fellow paddling enthusiasts a chance to become better paddlers a midst a fun group of people who truly enjoy being on the water. Over the past few years the whole group has grown and developed a lot of skillful paddlers who've generously given their time and skills to help other people achieve their own paddling goals and proficiency. We've been very fortunate to have such a well rounded and fun group.
We're looking forward to a great season ahead! Join us!
We start anytime after 5:30 PM. We practice, play and yak till its dark or everyone is sufficiently water logged
Please see the link below for the location of Camp Kiwanee:

Re: Camp Kiwanee
I talked to the caretaker today and found out the gate is almost always open and would only be closed after dark if there was a vandalism problem or a big party (graduation) in the area. Even if you should find it closed someday, it's not locked so it's ok to open it to access the pond.
A lot of groups use the main lodge for dinners and weddings etc. and some people are there renting cabins occasionally. Tomorrow night (Thursday) the Hanson Historical group is putting on a dinner of which I will be attending at 6 PM so there will be a lot of traffic and a contractor is also replacing the roof on the main lodge.
I did not have a thermometer with me so I didn't check the current water temp.

Hi, recently moved back to eastern ma and was psyched to hear of the group. The skills training looks like a great thing to do, so I just have a newbie question- never having been to camp kiwanee - is it obvious where to park, unload, etc. when I get there?
Thanks!

Hi Caf,
Happy to hear your up for joining the fun with all of us.
Yes, parking is easy and obvious. We access the pond through the boat ramp which is clearly visible from the parking area. The docks are part of he camp ground and we stay outside of that in the roped off swimming area. The rest of the body of water is ours to enjoy.
See you soon

Thanks, Jordan, for the info. Am in VT right now (from whence I moved) and there's another frost warning...feeling chilly so I may wait until June for outdoor immersion!
Re: Skills 2013 Hanson / Starting May 23rd
Both Kit and I are planning on being there. AND PPR, I’ve been looking forward to Buffalo pizza @ J&Rs for months.

Are we still on given the forecast and radar map? My boat's on the car, and I'm ready to roll, but I'd hate to be the only one up there.

Last weather I heard, they believe that the afternoon storms are going to stay out west, with only a rare chance for brief showers on south shore and cape. Rain will definitely be here after dark, tho.

Still at work. Not going to make it. You probably won't see this anyway. lol

Great start to the skills season! I believe I counted 18 kayakers on the pond. Pretty good for a night with a questionable weather outlook. Nice to see everybody again.

Thanks all for making this happen! I needed to get my confidence back with some of those moves.
Did somebody say there was a barbecue place for a dinner option nearby?

Re: Skills 2013 Hanson / Starting May 23rd
Maybe somebody was talking about the barbecue place near Sunset Lake in Braintree?
A few years ago, we did some early season skills sessions there and had barbecue for PPR.

Re: Skills 2013 Hanson / Starting May 23rd
Chili Head bbq is on rt 106 in w bridgewater, about a mile east of rt 24. It's probably 20+ minutes from Hanson - and the wrong direction for anyone from Marshfield area.
If anyone ever gets out to Sturbridge, check out BT's Smokehouse on rt 20. Best bbq I've had
Tennessee's is the place in Braintree.
