Sunset/Moonrise Paddle to the Spit - Sunday, June 23, 2013

Post by norm »

Five of us got together for the Sunday evening paddle to the Spit from the Driftway. The tide was lower than any of us had seen before but we left after dead low to be on a rising tide. There was no big feast this time, just salsa and nachos, cheese and crackers and some fruit. The sunset had some potential, but a big batch of clouds were in just the wrong spot. The moonrise was pretty good but was further to the right than in previous trips. The weather was fantastic. A little breezy, but warm enough that jackets were not needed. Overall it was a very nice night for a short trip.

Please enjoy these pictures on Facebook that should be accessible to anyone, even if you do not have a Facebook account.

It was such a long day that there was still some light when we started our trip back. And Norm's idea of a solar powered beacon to mark the launch site worked out very well.

Norm, I saw your comment about Brown's Bank possibly disappearing or something over the winter?

Brown's Bank is mentioned in William Bradford's "History of Plymouth plantation 1620-1647", references as early as 1635. At that time it had tree stumps on it. It seems to have some permanence, despite the occasional mariner who has trouble finding it. (I have been on a paddle with such a mariner.)

Here are my photos. Not perfect, but considering they were taken with my waterproof camera I am actually fairly pleased. The Spit is a very special place at full moon. I hope there will be another Wild Turkey full moon trip to the Spit this season:
