Question about seals

Post by Griffd »

I've encountered a lone seal on two occasions during the past week. The first one was located between Wickets Island and Onset Island in Onset. And, yesterday, I had one pop up right in front of me while paddling the Weweantic river in Marion. After spotting that one, I backed my Kayak into some eel grass about 30 yards away so I could take some pictures. After a while, he spotted me and ended up a few yards in front of my kayak and began coming closer and closer. Not knowing if seals are aggressive or just curious by nature, I exited the kayak and pulled it further into the eel grass. Of course, he stayed right there for another 15 minutes. I know many of you have paddled amongst seals.... Have they ever been aggressive?

Never. They are curious but generally shy. You were lucky to have one come so close!

This is the third report about a possibly rabid seal I've heard of from the Marion area lately.

Now I suppose you're going to tell me there have been sightings of rabid Great Whites in Marion!

I think my daughter was trying to make a point when she posted this link on my Facebook page.
