Welcome JodyJeanne! I'll have to watch out for a Loon on the local rivers and ponds to say hi if you don't make it out to a gathering. I like paddling the local rivers and ponds in a Perception Sparky 9' recreational kayak. I want to hit as many local spots as soon as possible this spring before the...

I've got the solution for your envious views of the water as you drive into Boston - go in before sunrise! I shoot for arriving in Southie by 5:20 to get a free parking space - can't see the water too well at that time... Dave - can you take your boat to work? We should get together and launch from ...

I wish I could join you but we're going to a track meet tomorrow. Have a great time and be safe - hope someone can join you. I made it down to Long Pond in Lakeville this evening and did a 5 mile paddle up and down the east shoreline. What a huge variation in houses...or should I say mansions, house...

Pat - I think your picture is better than any of the shots I took! Very nice. Nelson - not many details to talk about - it was just an easy, tame paddle around a pond - we did about 4 miles - saw one great blue heron and one swan. Great to get out on an evening in April though. Monponsett Inn had go...

The gate to the state ramp is open. I did not see any signs giving any warning of the distance to the turn so I took some measurements. It is on Rte 58 3.4 miles south of the Camp Kiwanee driveway. It is a right turn .26 miles south of the Monponsett Inn parking lot entrance. It is a left turn .75 m...

I'm hoping to take a ride down there tonight to confirm that the boat ramp parking lot gate is not locked closed. There is another access point but I don't know if the 2nd spot is really public property. I can't find the online listing of boat ramps today but Mark gave a good description of the ramp...

Nelson - Are you getting that November 2008 date from the picture? Gotta remember those Brits use day-month-year format rather than month-day-year. Mike - Thanks for posting the info about this. I'd love to get a longer boat with 4 hatches. Maybe I'll have enough money to buy one if I put away 40 bu...

Since the water is still kinda cold for us non-rollers and the tide is not favorable this week, how about a different idea...how about a lake that is large enough for sea kayaks, has a nice boat ramp with large parking lot and is usually too full of power boats in the summer to be enjoyable for padd...

I'm afraid I'm a definite no for Hingham today. Can't get there in time so I think I'll check out Cleveland Pond at Ames Nowell State Park, Abington, at about 5:00/5:30 if I get my truck back from the mechanic on time. The pond there is large and fairly nice this time of year before the underwater g...

I checked the distance (~ 85 miles) and realized I don't really feel like spending 3-4 hours traveling just to browse around unless somebody says its an incredible show. I'm mostly looking for cold weather paddle-wear right now anyway and I doubt there would be much of a selection for that type of s...

N.E. Paddlesports Show
I just came across this by accident - surprised nobody mentioned it here - is the New England Paddlesports Show at UNH Durham worth the trip?

Gearing up - Compass?
I don't see doing any long trips out of site of land, and I do already carry a GPS most of the time, but I was wondering if I should bother getting a deck compass? My thinking is that it might be handy for staying on a bearing if you get stuck out in the fog - the GPS can be a pain to see and fiddle...

I did that cache with my paddling cache buddies "yakingcampers" last June. We really enjoyed that one - started late and ended up finding it by flashlight. We paddle that pond a couple times a year. Frogman - I'm another paddling geocacher. Actually that's the type of geocaches I like the most. They don't seem very popular with the general caching crowd, so don't be discouraged if you don't get many hits. Most paddling caches I've done were on small bodies of water in my recreational kayak - th...

There were a few dealers with kayaks there last year but I don't recall a lot of sea kayaks...mostly rec, river and fishing models. Boat Show
Has anyone been to the boat show this week? I was wondering if there is anything interesting to kayakers. I went last year and there were a few small boat displays that were interesting, but my time is limited this year and I don't want to make the effort to go if all they have is big power and sail...
