Skills 2020 Starting May 21st (REVISED)

Post by kayakerjnj »

Greetings all,

Warm weather is coming!

With that thought, I wanted to Post the Start Date for the First Thursday Skills Session, Thursday May 7th.

This year has been anything but normal, but we can still do what we love at a safe distance and not let this current crisis take away our season.

The venue for skills can be designated at a different location if people from different areas prefer it, please post a suggestion / request.

While we're still working around a Thursday for our skills evenings, another day or a weekend also works, just let me know.

In the interim, its not too early to do some boat / gear maintenance. Check your stuff, spend some time making your boat transportation system, function efficiently and smoothly. Have a great start to your season!

If folks would like an outfitting day, we can plan one. Many of us have a lot of practice with Minicell and other customizing materials. The better you fit your boat, the better your boat will respond to you. Please let me know if you're interested and or need some adjustments and we can organize a day to take care of it.

Details below for Skills Below;

We host these free sessions for all who wish to participate, Club Members and those who just wish to get involved.
We have been conducting these sessions for many years now. Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of them.
The more proficient your skills are, the safer and more enjoyable your days on the water will be.

These sessions begin as early as 4 PM, and can last until sunset or until the group succumbs to the need to PPR :D (post paddle refreshment) PPR's will be on hold, unless we space out some safe distance group tailgating, we can figure that out in time.

We've been utilizing Kiwanee in Hanson https://goo.gl/maps/3VUQ1 (We might wish to do some reconnaissance to make sure its open)

As long as there is interest we intend to keep this activity going.

Our Skills Sessions are an informal and low key opportunity for all to practice in a well-supported environment of fellow paddlers – instructors.

For those who are new to paddling, or have just joined the WT Flock, these sessions are open to all, flat water paddlers, sea kayakers, and WW Kayakers.

We emphasize acquiring your safety essentials first, wet exit, self and assisted rescues etc. If you’re looking for more excitement, you can work on more advanced paddling strokes and your roll too.

There are many regulars who have worked to acquire advanced paddling skills and they often assist other people achieve their own goals.

PFD’s are a must. Nose plugs, and scuba masks help keep the pond out of your sinuses. You’ll want them if you’re practicing skills that will immerse you in the water.

The first few weeks of our skills season are likely to be cool water, so please bring cold water attire so you can keep warm when you're in the water.

Everyone stay safe and keep yourselves and families healthy!

See you on the water soon

Given the recent MASSACHUSETTS Non-Essential Stay at Home has been extended to May 15.

Let's plan on the May 20th for the first Skills.

I stopped by Camp Kiwanee in Hanson today to make sure the parking lot and launch are open. Good news, nothing has been roped off and we can parking and launch the way we always do.

See you Thursday.

Thank you Bea for checking.

My bad, I went yesterday after doing an errand in Abington.

Looks like they cleared a lot of trees along access road. Everything was open and clear, clean and looks to be in great shape for us this season.

Have a great week! See you Thursday

Got an email this morning from the AMC Boston meetup list that includes a web page with some ideas about how to perform rescues and raft-ups with some social distancing.

Here is the URL for the web page with videos: https://www.onadventure.dk/assisted-kayak-rescues-and-rafts-with-increased-distance?fbclid=IwAR2dRXDHHPTmXb_oijDbEuWsWj35U2_g0H9p5ueS6UE6spNVAzIuI_55NJE

Great start to our 2020 Skills Season. We were treated to a new face who is a "Greenland Yoda" Absolute pleasure to watch such expertise in the boat.

Hope to see Dan again.

Happy to see so many for our first night, the day is quite beautiful and we lucked out!

Stay well everyone.

If folks wish to move around the venue, post a suggestion, please make sure there's access and parking and we can move this activity where its desired most.

Have a great weekend!
