As usual, I posted this trip at the last minute, on Friday afternoon. I chose this spot figuring that I could paddle this area alone if nobody replied and also because I thought it might be difficult to find parking other places on a Saturday afternoon with excellent weather. Well, I was happy that Karen replied that she would join me and then Skip called at the last minute saying he was on the way. So, the three of us launched at about 1:30pm.
There is no beach area near the ramp, so we had to launch from the slippery concrete.
We paddled down river against the incoming tide. There was a pretty good current under the bridge.
There was a little bit of power boat traffic in the river channel.
At one point we stopped to let a few boats pass so we could cross the weaving channel.
This Cigarette boat had some excellent graphics.
Had to take a second shot.
There are some nice houses along the Weweantic.
There are a few rocks sticking up, showing why the power boats stay in the channel.
Where there are rocks, there are usually cormorants.
The water got a little choppier now and then, but the breeze was welcome on such a warm afternoon.
Karen looking at a nice, new house out on Cromeset Point.
Skip looking in at Swifts Beach in the Wareham River.
Karen spots an ice cream truck on the beach and bolts for shore.
We couldn't get to the beach in time to stop the truck, so we stood off-shore to see which way the truck was going to see if he was going to next beach to the left or the right.
Well, we didn't have any luck catching the ice cream truck, so we started looking for a beach to pull up on to have a snack. This one looked good from a distance but when we got closer, it had a sea wall and the houses were very close.
There was a nice boat ramp on the Wareham River, but still no beach area to stop on.
Looking upriver to Wareham Neck, trying to remember if there's an ice cream shop near the boatyard or public dock up there.
We swung around and paddled along the Parkwood Beach neighborhood. There was a beach that looked public at Barney's Point, but is was pretty crowded. A little bit further there was a sand bar big enough for us to land at and have a snack.
We landed and took some pictures.
Our little private sandbar looked like it had a former nest on it.
Looking over at the small Barney's Point Beach.
Behind our sandbar was the Crooked River with some boats moored in it.
Time to go.
On the way back, Skip played chicken with a sailboat that was not going much faster than we were paddling.
Back at Cromeset Point there were some common terns on a rock.
Heading up Cromeset Neck, there was one large sailboat.
Further up the Weweantic, we came across the Spiderman Cigarette boat so we had to take a couple more pictures of it.
Another common tern using a buoy for its perch.
Back at the boat ramp, we loaded up our boats and discussed the best route home. Skip said Route 58 was the most direct and had no traffic, so we all headed home that way for a leisurely ride home.
Here is a topo map of the area with our route highlighted.
A few stats from the trip:
Launched at 1:30pm
Stopped for snack at 3:30pm after 5.75 miles and launched again at 3:55pm.
Back to take-out at about 5:35pm after a total of 10.26 miles.
Thanks for joining me Karen and Skip. Sorry we had such a slog back up river into the wind and against the outgoing tide that last 2.5 miles. It was still much better to be out on the water than home doing chores!

Norm, That was a great day on the water. Thanks for posting and organizing the trip. Route 58 was a nicer ride home, and quicker.

I agree, route 58 was much better than the highway.
I kept waiting for you to pull into one of those ice cream shops on 58. I would have been right behind you!
