Rough Water Rescue Practice - New Inlet - 7/13/11

Post by norm »

Briggsy did his best to arrange an evening of rough water rescue practice and made a trip up from the Cape to make it more accessible for a larger group. The plan was to meet at the Driftway at 4:00pm and paddle out to New Inlet and hopefully find some waves to practice rescues in. Tracey and I had joined Briggsy for a full day of paddling in Cohasset and then loaded up our boats on our trucks and drove over to the Driftway for this evening session. We arrived to find Bea, Ron and Pat getting ready to go out for practice.

Bea was really serious about doing some swimming - she was prepared in a full wet suit.

We had quite a variety of boat colors.

The Driftway launch was a busy place with people launching and landing.

We started paddling and the weather seemed fine.

The guys were just chatting away and paddling while Bea and Tracey fell behind because Tracey got hung up on a mud flat.

The tide was just about dead low and the marsh grasses were high overhead.

When Pat got out to the spit, he turned around to wait for everyone else and noticed the ominous skies. We got out and looked back trying to decide what to do.

Ron and Briggsy had contiued on further out toward open water. They came back when they noticed we were not joining them.

We all got out to discuss our options. Briggsy and I checked the weather on our cell-phones and it did not look good at all. We decided we'd have to call it a night and head straight back to the Driftway.

By the time we landed back at the take-out, it was raining pretty hard and we had seen a few flashes of lightning in the distance. We decided quickly to head to Scituate Harbor for PPR. Some people changed into dry clothes in their cars and others changed at the restaurant.

Thanks for organizing the practice night Briggsy. Sorry it didn't work out.
