The NSRWA asked for the Wild Turkey Paddlers to assist with a sunset / moonrise paddle from the Driftway to The Spit. Seventeen paddlers attended the fundraiser event and five Turkeys assisted as escorts. I thought it was fun to actually get some communication practice with the marine radio and get some practical use out of it besides weather forecasts. The five Turkeys that assisted were: Pat, Chip, Ron, Tracey and Norm.
Paula from NSRWA handled all the sign-in insurance paperwork at the put-in and then to Pat's surprise, turned over the leadership of the event to him.
Pat gave a little safety speech to the group.
Everybody helped each other get launched.
We started paddling. With the large group and variety of boat sizes and skill levels, the pace was kept pretty slow to keep the group fairly close together. Tracey and I brought up the rear. I think Pat and Ron were up front and Chip was somewhere in the middle of the pack.
The group was kept together pretty well on the way out. Being in the back, it seemed that the guys up front kept slowing the group so we were not left too far behind. Good job up there!
Sea gull walking into the sun on a sand bar.
The group pulled up on the first part of the spit.
Kayaks of many types and sizes.
The sun kept poking in and out of the clouds when we arrived on The Spit.
Most of the group took a walk further out on the spit while a few hung around close to the boats. I went part-way and stopped to try to capture pictures of the least terns behind the fenced-off area.
A few people wanted to head back before it got too dark, so Tracey and I gave them an escort as the sun was starting to set.
The water was very calm as we got back near the Driftway.
There were a few great egrets near the Driftway but it was getting too dark to get a good picture.
We used the radios extensively to communicate that there were other small groups coming back and we coordinated getting escorts in place for everyone.
I missed the moonrise over Fourth Cliff, but got back out there in time to try to capture a few pictures with the moon a little higher in the sky.
I think Ron may have had a good camera with him, so he probably has some better pictures than these.
It was a nice night out there. It seemed that everybody had a good time and there were no problems that I saw. I wouldn't mind doing that type of trip again and staying a little later.
