With Gif and AMC to Weepecket 7/27/2011

Post by NorwayLady »

On Wednesday July 27 Norm and I paddled with AMC and Gif Allen from Quisset Harbor to Weepecket Island. Gif gave me the permission to post the trip report on the Wild Turkey site, and I have added my photos. I am sure Norm has a few photos to add; after all I only took 80 photos on the trip and he took 200!!!! The Wild Turkeys did a similar trip last year, where the conditions were similar.

Here is the trip according to Gif:

Trip Report:
Quissett Hbr. to Weepecket Islands.
Participants: Haven Roosevelt, Roger Good, Josko Catipovic, Scott
Haigh, Bea Ellis, Norm Caseley, and Gif Allen, Leader.

I had expressed concerns about the limited parking space at Quissett
Harbor, so people arrived early.

As it turned out there was more
than enough space.

So to pass time, a few decided to hike out
towards the “Knob.”

We left about 10:20AM into gentle seas and a nice breeze from the
NW. We were headed southwest to Woods Hole.

Upon reaching the edge
of Woods Hole passage, we gathered to decide whether we wanted to
head directly to the Weepecket’s, or bear off and cross over to
Hadley’s Harbor. We chose the later. Crossing Woods Hole was
uneventful. There was a westward current of 2 to 3 knots with some
chop. Comments were made as to how few the boats were for such a
beautiful day.

We explored Hedley’s,

and attempted to paddle against the current through one of the east gates.

Having thought better of it, we headed west to exit Hadley’s and head for Weepecket Island.

By this time the wind had lessen and had began backing into the SW as
forecasted.Weepecket was abound with seagulls. Josko made the comment that when
he was last here the island was over run with Cormorants.

People swam; the water was clear and warm. We had lunch and good
conversation. I’d say we spent about an hour there.

Leaving, we headed south around to the backside of the island, and then west
towards the outer Weepeckets. As we approached the south side of the
island, that’s when we saw the Cormorants. I mean thousands (or at
least hundreds), and more seagulls.

With a SW breeze, conditions for the five-mile trip back were
perfect.

In all the total distance covered was reported to be 12.4
to 12.8 miles. An absolutely beautiful day for this trip.

Nice job, Bea. You are getting good at this.
Hey, did you and Norm paddle around the harbor 10-20 times to get your 15 miles in?

I told Bea that Gif had short-changed us on the trip distance when I looked at my GPS, but she gave him a pass after he had shown us all his surgery scars!

I finally got a chance to go through my pictures and pick out a few. Many are very similar to Bea's except she is in the shot instead of me.

Bea really wanted to give paddling against the current under this bridge a try, but by the time she told me about it, everybody else had already turned around and she didn't want to hold everyone up. I think she needs a trip to Cohasset's Little Harbor to play in the wave.
