Boston outer Islands 8/24-26/2011

Post by SteveH »

For anyone interested - myself and two friends paddled out of Webb Park through Hull Gut to Great Brewster (about 5 miles in 90 minutes) on the morning of Aug 24th. We hit the Gut on outgoing tide - minimal boat activity meant it was somewhat uneventful. We camped two nights on Great Brewster. You can contact the DCR via email to obtain a permit for camping. We planned to try Calf or Outer Brewster the second night, but it was supposed to rain Thursday evening (it did) and there is a 10x10 shelter on Brewster you can use. There is a composting toilet part way across the island but the solar fan is not working and it is pretty ripe. Digging a cat hole in the brush or carry out is another option. There is plenty of fairly flat ground to pitch your tent. If you are into history you will like exploring this island. One final note on Brewster camping - as you might imagine it is far from quiet. The planes settle down shortly after midnight, but the bugs are crazy loud until the gulls get going around 5:00 AM. We paddled over to Boston Light Wednesday afternoon and the keeper spent about an hour giving us a private tour -very neat. They were actually getting ready to bug out Friday due to Irene's pending visit. On day two we paddled to Lovell's and then to Georges for more island exploration. The head wind on this trip had to be more than 15mph and it took significant effort and time to get there. Anyway, we plan to head back to explore all the other islands we did not have time for this trip. I'll post a few pics later...

Never stood on Little Brewster before. The Keeper was super nice and took us on a great tour.

For this trip my wife performed shuttle duty. We considered a few spots in Hull where we could leave a car overnight but I did not want to be thinking about my truck on the trip or come back to any issues. Going out of Webb is maybe 4 miles from my house so not too much to ask of the spouse.

Thanks for all the info Steve, that is a trip I am definitely looking forward to next year. The other islands are too "organized". Nice to spend 2 nights out there.

I finally posted some trip pics. Looks like I need to host the files externally so I can comment via text in between each pic rather than enter a file comment. Anyway, better than nothing for a first attempt...

This looks just as lovely as can be. Aren't we lucky to have these islands so close to Boston? thanks for posting the report and pics!
