The following was copied over from another post. Feel free to add the next part...

[NorwayLady wrote?]

With 13 Wild Turkeys on this trip we were talking about splitting the task of writing the trip report. Sort of like a Pot Luck trip report.

Who is writing the intro...

Great trip today. Thank you Jordan!

NorwayLady.

[Eileen wrote?]

OK - I'll write the intro -

It was a bright and sunny day...

Ha Ha. It's really too late to start writing. It was a great day - thanks Jordan!

See you soon.

[Jordan wrote?]

After we woke up to a bright sunny day

I met Nelson in Marshfield, and like clockwork he was there at the Christmas tree shop. We loaded up and were off to Plymouth to meet up with Bea, Todd, Ron, Roy and Mike. Our Convoy was off to Chatham.

When we arrived at the Causeway we had lots of company, tons of vehicles lining the road (people clamming in the shallows). We still managed to drop the boats off on the harbor side quickly as we were double parked. As Eileen, Diane, and Linda arrived we managed to the old PIT Crew Boat Unload and get everyone's gear off very efficiently, almost like we knew what we were doing :)

Then I realized I had made a huge blunder, I realized to my own personal horror, that I had left all THREE of my spray skirts in the basement drying from Thursday. Fortunately Eileen, had a spare and bailed me out!

To the groups amazement we were all in our boats and warming up by ~ 9:32 AM! By 9:38 AM we had briefly discussed the plan, made introductions, and 13 paddlers were off to find some seals.

More Parts to follow.........

I (Nelson) decided to experiment with my camcorder and had it mounted on the deck in front of me. I could be seen zooming from here to there trying to set up for some decent footage.

We paddled through Stage Harbor and took the channel that passes between the old lighthouse (without a light) and Harding's Beach. A couple of us spotted a lone seal but he didn't stay around too long. I paddled up ahead and got out of my boat to get some shots of eveyone going through the channel. The current had a little strenght to it and people had to work a bit to get through. After everyone had made it through I jumped back in my boat and caught up with them.

Outside the channel we gathered up before making our crossing towards Monomoy but before too long we found ourselved paddling in only 8 inches of water (if that) and our paddles were scaping the bottom with every stroke. We got a fair distance across when I head someone yell "Hey! John's here!" In his usual fashion John appeared out of nowhere and joined the paddle.

We continued on against the incoming tide, some wind and no water to paddle in and it was at that point that everyone decided to get out of their boats and walk for awhile in search of deeper water. I heard the mermer of discouraging groans throughout the group wondering if the whole day would be like this. But we forged on. In the distance we saw a large number of dark objects on one of the flats. From this distance they looked pretty big and their shape did somewhat resemble a lounging seal. We moved in for a closer look only to find that it was a gang of Cormorants enjoying the beautiful weather. Again, we continued on towards the outside of Monomoy......

As we hiked towards Monomoy draging our boats behind us, Eileen? (Dianne acctually, corrected :( )spotted a large bunch of balloons rolling over the water. She made off to capture the offending litter and found deeper water on the way. I followed to assist in the popping :) .

We followed that deeper channel as it bent back east but were soon in the shallows again. A little more hiking and the water deepened again. As I reverted back to paddling from hiking, I found myself fighting my skirt to get it over the coaming. In doing so, my paddle and I became separated. The southwest wind was really picking up and I had soon drifted 6' away from my paddle. Luckily I had my spare (more about that later) and sculled back to retreive my lost friend. Ron (Todd, also corrected again ) came to help in stowing my spare.

Now we entered the channel that would take us to the seals. The current was strong and the power boat traffic picked up and was concentrating at the head of this channel. Strong eddylines were shearing off of the inside of each turn creating upwelling spots and each cluster of paddlers sought their comfort zone. Some favored the lighter, more confused eddyline on the inside of the channel, while others preferred the stronger steadier current on the outsides of the turns. Still others cut the apexes of each turn crossing over at each meandering. Seal sightings were becoming more frequent. I for one, was happy just to have enough water to immerse my paddle.

Throughout the shallow bit Jordan seemed to thrive on the "sculling" against the bottom (A special low angle paddling technique he is saving for the next training session I guess) and he did not walk much. Those with sore elbows must take care in this kind of situation as this exerts side loads to the joint and you will feel it the next day :( .

While we were walking through the shallows it was interesting to note how fast the current was even at 8" depth! There was on this day following the full moon, a very low astronomical tide, combined with high pressure made the incoming tide a greater factor.....

I (Todd) was unsure on whether the slowness of my boat was due to the currents, or the fact that my water line was deeper than intended and I was coming in contact with the bottom. (This is most likely due to the fact that my yak is intended for a less burly guy than I-another reason I can use to get a larger yak for next year.) But even in the shallows I could see seaweed and alga pointing in the current back in the direction we came.

Here is where I saw some Hermit Crabs. Eileen I and I talked about them when we heading back to the Harbor, and I forgot to let her look at my book. One of the most important things about Hermit Crabs is their blood, which aids in manufacturing heart valves. They are close to being endangered right now because they are used for bait.

I took this time to reintroduce myself to some of our new freinds, Diane (who was the one gathering the ballons Roy), Eileen, Jackie, Linda, and Ken. I hadn't met Roy yet (I helped with the paddle, unless Ron did it another time) and it was nice to see some new happy faces. We continued to follow the channel when we got to deeper water, and every once in a while we we see a head pop up and survey the situation. I was hoping for more, but even if this was it, I would be satisfied. I'll be back for more, but others will have something to add at this time.

I'm back. It was intersting to watch 13 paddlers moving through the channel toward S. Monomoy. We stayed pretty much as a group, but there would be a lead group of 4-5, a middle group, and a sweep group. Jordan in the lead group would often call to fringe paddlers to wait when we need to regroup and discuss our next move. Some of us would be on the windward side of the channel, others on the lee, and boats were continuously powering through the middle on their way out.

I can contribute part of the confused waves in Monomoy as wakes from boats going in every direction. The channels waren't as clearly marked as other paddling spots, most likely due to ever changing configuration of the Island and sand bars.

For some pictures I took

It was indeed a great day. The mindset is always good on Saturday mornings - looking forward to another great day on the water with friends...

This morning proved to be one of the better ones - I was very impressed at the 'pit crew' style unloading (many thanks!) - why haven't we ever thought of this before??! With such a large crowd, and the distance travelled by most, plus the jammed causeway, I was very impressed at the efficient launch. Kudos to all.

Once leaving Stage Harbor, I was again reminded of the spirit of things - love and peace = happiness. I was glad to see Todd's picture posted already - glad that I wasn't the only one given a smile by seaweed. For those of you unable to make the trip, smiling at seaweed by proxy is still a good thing.

Onward and outward, anticipation at its best. Will we see the seals? Will the islands still hold the mystic beauty that always moves me? Will the horseshoe crabs that are so abundant in spring be all around us on the flats? Yes, I digress, not only paddling, but in reminiscing and well.

So, after chasing after cormorants, hoping they were seals, we did the Monomoy March. It was a good time for a stretch, wasn't it? I just love hte pictures!! Onward and outward.

Across the bay, up the channel (beautiful spot, had to stop and enjoy the views through the dunes[digression!]), and then to the herd! What a herd it was!! We were all so happy to come across the pack, and that they stayed around, just for our entertainment, eh?

Let's not forget the best part - good friends, good fun (love and peace does equal happiness afterall). It was a nice surprise then that not long after we landed, there came 4 kayaks, 2 of which we occupied by friends from last year. What a wonderful community we have...

Time to leave, get back to Chatham via the Light, so we can meet yet more paddlers, get out for a drink and a bite, and the ever-present need for jewelery shopping downtown. (I think you guys missed that point, and you may not want to tell your wives that this is part of the Chatham experience!)

The only thing missing was the horseshoe crab cotillion - with mating season being over, we had to settle for the floating outgrown shells. Not too shabby.

Yes, it was a great day. Thanks to all for such a wonderful day.

Next posting I'll try to have no wind.

Those gray seals were such a comical lot. I loved the little ones as they came up to us, because they were so playful and curious. They were still light grey and could be mistaken for harbor seals. Sometimes they would pop up behind our kayaks to get a better look, and play in the wake of the kayak. However, Momma and Popa were not too thrilled when those little squirts would edge toward our boats. 400-800 pounds of anxiety would transform these HUGE creatures into menacing, snorting threats. They would guard the rest of the herd with their bulk and dare us to come closer. As they rounded out their nostrils and pointed their long snouts in our direction, we edged back, giving them some room. At times, they would flip, with a splash and disappear under the water and surface nearer the boats. My favorite image is of the 50 or so seals, peering at us, with their noses resting on the surface of the water and 100 eyes staring in our direction. And didn't they smell grand?! They loved to follow our moving boats, the whole herd, sidling along, as we moved one way or the other. They got nervous around more than 3 boats and would disappear, and they definently shut down with the motorized boats. It is important to remember that they are protected and that humans need to stay a good distance from them. Undue stress and all. Pretty impressive, to say the least.

We lucked out! Thanks to Jordan and the rest of the turkey paddlers for putting together a fantastic day!

OK--I'm an official member as of one minute ago. Gobble, gobble. Saturday was a fun day! It was a beautiful, sunny late summer day--and I couldn't think of a better way to spend it--with old friends and new friends, visiting the gray seals of Monomoy. Jordan did a great job smoking these guys out, as they have definitely moved from past years. These seals are the best. There is something almost human about them as they tread water, snorting and grunting--while they check us out from a safe distance. I wish I had had a camera with me--but luckily for me--there were a number of photographers on the trip--and, I have to say, the pictures are awesome. Other than a period of slogging through two-inch water, the conditions could not have been better. And besides, that shallow water builds character! :) An added bonus was our return trip--which took us through a fun, following sea on which we could ride the waves back to our take-out location. --It was great to meet everyone--and I hope to paddle with the Turkeys again soon!

Ok I'm not sure everyone is getting the idea. I think the plan was to write a collaborative trip report (at least that's what Bea said but it's possible she imagined it). Anyway Jordan started out the day with getting there, getting on the water and intros. I took the next chunk, and got us through the channel in into the flats, etc. Let's see if we can continue the report through lunch and the trip back. Linda covered the seals pretty well but feel free to comment on them as you continue on.

The plan we hope is to put the peices together and create an official trip report page.

Please keep this in mind as you continue.

Bea.... why don't you take the lunch break. Oh yeah, I forgot... you slept through it.

OK. So I slept through lunch. However, I'll be happy sharing my dreams.........I dream I was on a tropical island surrounded by sea creatures.........

Actually I tried to be exempt from writing, since I have English as my second language. I'll be happy to write my part in Norwegian. Is that OK?

I was also thinking about doing the "patching" at the end. Little things we forgot. One thing that comes to mind is Ron's new contraption. His custom made Wild Turkey trailer with a pretty impressive (simple) strap system that can hold 5 yaks. It even has the official Wild Turkey logo on it! Did anyone get a picture of that?

Thank you Linda for the links to seal info. Those seals were BIG (males weighing 375 to 880 punds!)

One fun fact I learned from Linda's link is that the gray seal's scientific name, Halichoerus grypus, derives from the Greek words meaning "hook-nosed sea pig".

Ok......next contributor....wrapping up this report........or moving it past the seals.

Well...we lounged around on a spit of sand watching the seals watch us from the cove and generally trying to figure out where the heck we had actually landed. Monomoy is a mystical place where the currents and shifting land conspire to confound and confuse.

Opinions and educated guesses abounded. By assorted lights, we were:
1) On the far southern end of South Beach.
2) On the far northern tip of South Monomoy Island.
3) On a sandbar quickly being subsumed by the rising tide. (Kayaks and a snoozing Wild Turkey had to relocate to higher sand at the last moment as a miniature tidal bore snuck around from the east to catch us off guard.)
4) Someplace off of Cape Cod.
5) Where we wanted to be.

My compass couldn't help here; this was a job for GPS. The Wild Turkey high-tech navigation team swung into action with their toys and soon determined that we were actually some distance out on South Monomoy. A trip to the open Atlantic side of the spit provided visual confirmation: off to the south in the haze stood the lighthouse so familiar to those of us who have fished for Blues and Stripers out in the Pollock Rip off the tip of Monomoy.

With that mystery solved we turned our attention back to our many new pals poking their dark noggins and muzzles out of the water in the cove. Not a bad life being a seal, it seemed.

A member of the expedition subsequently decided to ply his kayaking skills in the surf on the Atlantic side. Then...

The GPS readout certainly gives an idea of how much things shift around out there. :?

I don't seem to recall such a long transverse portage...a good deal of walking and towing in a few inches of water perhaps...but I must have been otherwise occupied for the big overland trek. 8)
